SCAPA Outreach: Pavement Professional Panel with Civil Engineering Students

Earlier this month, Dr. Brad Putman's Pavement Design & Construction class took a break from traditional lectures. Instead of Powerpoint presentations and printed notes, the class hosted a group of ten professionals of different backgrounds and different levels of involvement with pavements. The Pavement Professional Panel interacted with the class in a "speed dating" setup, where students split up into groups and were allotted 7-10 minutes to pick the brain of each professional. The 42-student section of Dr. Putman's course prepared questions related to pavements but also utilized the opportunity to ask about topics that would help them in their professional and personal lives.

The panel had representatives from many aspects of the business: SCDOT, County Public Works, contractors, material testing firms, consultant engineer firms and pavement associations.

SCAPA had two representatives at the event: Jayson Jordan, PE and Jason Edmonds, PE.  Mr. Edmonds is Chief Estimator of Ashmore Brothers, a division of Rogers Group, Inc. and is a civil engineering alumnus at Clemson University. He currently serves on SCAPA's Board of Directors. Mr. Jordan, SCAPA's Technical Director, was a student in Dr. Putman's inaugural section of Pavement Design & Construction while studying civil engineering at Clemson University. He added, "This course was one of my favorites as it was very interactive and prepared me very well for many things I have encountered in my professional career. Dr. Putman's course has grown 3-4 times in magnitude since its initial offering, which is a testament to his effectiveness as an instructor and ability to connect with students."
