This month SCAPA participated in the 2016 SC Aviation Association Annual Conference at the Wild Dunes Resort in Isle of Palms, SC. Over 350 Aviation industry leaders and airport professionals gathered to learn about industry updates from the Federal Aviation Administration and SC Aeronautics Commission. SCAPA staff spoke with attendees about the benefits of asphalt pavements for aviation facilities.

Across the country, the main runways at airports like Logan International (Boston) and Baltimore-Washington International are surfaced with asphalt. Asphalt's speed of construction advantage makes it an excellent tool for airport rehabilitations, especially in busy commercial airports. In 2009 Boston Logan was the first airport in the nation to use an environmentally friendly warm mix asphalt to pave a runway. Logan International has also utilized Fuel Resistant Polymer Modified Asphalt (PMA) Binders in asphalt mixes, which has helped reduce the need for maintenance sealers.

The Asphalt Institute is hosting an Airport Pavement Technical Workshop March 29-31, 2016 in Atlanta, GA. The workshop covers all facets of asphalt pavement design, construction, and maintenance for airport facilities.
