Exciting Changes to the CPHR Designation

Print this Article | Send to Colleague

CPHR Saskatchewan is reaching out to inform you about some exciting changes regarding the Chartered Professional in Human Resources (CPHR) designation. Over the past year the National Standards Advisory Committee has made recommendations on requirements related to achieving and maintaining the CPHR designation, and those recommendations have been approved by the CPHR Canada Board.

CPHR Saskatchewan Board of Directors reviewed and approved the proposed designation requirement changes at the Nov. 3, 2023 and Jan. 25, 2024 Board meetings. CPHR Saskatchewan Board must deliberate these changes through the lens of the regulator. The primary goal of the regulator is not to protect or enhance a profession’s reputation; it is to protect the public served by the profession. CPHR Saskatchewan works to ensure standards where the public trusts the work of the practitioner or that person with the designation. Members of the public can be confident in the work done by that person practicing the profession. A member of the public can trust that someone with a designation brings a certain level of integrity, experience and knowledge so that they can trust that person in the delivery of competent and ethical HR practices.

“We are acutely aware of striking the balance between ensuring public protection and that the designation remains current and relevant; and providing a clear and predictable path to the designation for candidates,” says our Board Chair Lionel Tootoosis. “CPHRs and candidates can expect updates to the requirements as the profession continues to evolve.”

As a result, the following designation requirement changes will be implemented over the coming months.

New Ethics Course

Effective May 1, 2024, there will be a new complimentary Ethics Course available for CPHRs as part of their CPD requirement. This course is designed to familiarize yourself with the essential concepts of ethics, to empower you to detect ethical issues as well as introduce you to the ethical analysis of situations. Information will be shared with CPHRs as it becomes available.

Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development (CIPD)

CPHR Canada and CPHR Saskatchewan have approved an MRA with CIPD (UK). Those Chartered Level 7 holders who wish to obtain the CPHR designation in Saskatchewan will be able to do so. CPHRs will also be able to obtain their CIPD designation. The process at this point is currently being worked on, and details will be communicated as they become available.

CPHR Saskatchewan believes that through these updated requirements, members have more opportunities to demonstrate to the public the confidence that they have the skills, knowledge, and experience to practice the HR profession. A member of the public can trust that someone with a designation brings a certain level of integrity, experience and knowledge so that they can trust that person in the delivery of competent and ethical HR practices.

These updates and changes will be reviewed at the upcoming General Info Session on March 27, 2024. We encourage you to reach out and attend.
