SUPPORT SCHOLARSHIPS AND DONATE TO THE RMEL FOUNDATION AUCTION

Donation Deadline is Friday, August 25th, 2023

Your donations are critical! Help support students pursuing electric energy careers by donating an item for the Annual RMEL Foundation Auction. The auction will be held during the 2023 Fall Convention on Tuesday, September 12th and is a primary resource for the 501c3 charity to support the funding of scholarships for the next generation of electric energy industry professionals.

We will use the same bidding app that we have used for the past couple of years. We will send more details to access that app before the auction.

Since its inception in the year 2000, the RMEL Foundation has grown considerably from the two $500 scholarships that year. To date, through your collective generosity and support, the RMEL Foundation has awarded more than 575 scholarships totaling more than $1.3 million for the next generation of electric energy professionals. Your support is needed to continue the Foundation's scholarship efforts. You are encouraged to donate an item to the auction and join the VIRTUAL auction to bid on donated items.

The outlook for U.S. utility-scale solar has improved on easing supply chain problems, but near-term residential solar growth may be hurt by rising interest rates and changes to California’s net metering policy, Morgan Stanley analysts said in a report.

While a cyber-attack has never caused a loss of load in North America, the threat landscape is “continuously evolving,” said Manny Cancel, CEO of the Electricity Information Sharing and Analysis Center, or E-ISAC. “Among the most pernicious are nation-states, which possess the capability to disrupt critical infrastructure in North America.”
In recent days, record-breaking extreme heat has provided a preview of what’s in store as global temperatures continue to rise, prompting an unprecedented increase in clean energy investments as governments around the world race to reduce their carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and secure a competitive edge in the burgeoning net-zero economy.
Despite ongoing supply chain constraints and anti-renewable energy legislation in Texas, U.S. demand for renewable electricity accelerated in the second quarter of 2023, according to Edison Energy’s Q2 Global Renewables Market Update. Buyers’ demand was bolstered by increased certainty around the tax credits in the Inflation Reduction Act, as the IRS issues final guidelines for their use.

The energy intensity for cooling commercial buildings in the United States depends on the climate the building is located in. Energy intensity in buildings is the energy consumed per square foot of floorspace. U.S. commercial buildings in hot or very hot climates, which are primarily in the southernmost parts of the country, were more than six times more energy-intensive for cooling (14.2 thousand British thermal units per square foot [MBtu/sf]) than buildings in cold or very cold climates (2.3 MBtu/sf), according to the latest Commercial Buildings Energy Consumption Survey (CBECS).
Utilities and other power system stakeholders should recalibrate their expectations for electricity demand in a decarbonized future, Tesla CEO Elon Musk told attendees at a summit held by Pacific Gas & Electric Tuesday, adding that “whatever your demand predictions are for electricity, I suspect they are too low… I recommend anticipating much higher demand.”

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission approved a rule to speed up clogged interconnection processes that have left power generation and energy storage projects waiting years for permission to connect to the grid.

A new study by Xcel Energy and the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) reveals the value and challenges of cold climate heat pumps, a key technology that could help support emission reductions of buildings. Among other things, the study evaluates the impacts of both extreme cold and high altitude on cold climate heat pump performance. The findings are the result of NREL experiments on two different cold climate air source heat pump configurations at NREL’s newly enhanced Thermal Test Facility in Golden, Colorado, and customer satisfaction results by Xcel Energy.
