Industry Information
Depending on where you live, connecting distributed energy resources (DERs) like solar panels and energy storage systems to the local electric grid is probably* more difficult than it should be. State interconnection policies play a significant role in determining how seamlessly someone can bring small-scale systems online, and those rules are attracting increased scrutiny as energy demand rises and electricity prices climb across the United States.
The U.S. Energy Information Administration forecasts natural gas consumption by the U.S. electric power sector this summer will remain near recent highs and set a record next summer in its Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO). Despite a 2% increase in overall U.S. electricity demand this summer, it expects natural gas-fired electricity generation to be similar to last summer, primarily because of forecast increased generation from renewables.
Clean energy developers announced 12 gigawatts (GW) and more than $19 billion worth of investments in the first quarter of this year, ahead of the expiration of some federal clean energy tax credits for solar and wind, but project cancellations also accelerated ‘sharply,’ according to new industry analysis. Overall, 45 projects, 41,000 jobs, and $14 billion in investments were canceled in Q1 2026. On the bright side, the 66 generation projects announced so far in Q1 are twice the total amount of projects announced in 2025 as a whole, per E2.

A siting feasibility study found that Sutherland, Beatrice, Brownville, and Norfolk are the top four communities best suited to host a next-generation nuclear facility, based on current infrastructure and siting criteria. The siting feasibility study was conducted at the direction of the Nebraska Legislature, who allocated $1 million to the Nebraska Department of Economic Development to fund the study.
Omaha Public Power District has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Nebraska-based Sandhills Energy for a new 250-megawatt (MW) facility coming to Burt County, Neb. Burt County Solar is expected to be in service by 2029, generating enough electricity to power 50,000 homes. It marks another milestone in the utility’s work to grow and diversify its energy portfolio to meet rapidly increasing demand throughout our service territory and region.
PNM, through its parent company, TXNM Energy, has been recognized by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) with the Humanizing Energy: Model for Community Engagement in Energy Projects Technology Transfer Award. This international honor highlights the importance of community-driven, culturally informed approaches to energy transition, an approach that has guided PNM’s work with the Navajo Nation and other communities across New Mexico.
White Paper
Scientists in Canada have discovered that ancient underground rocks are naturally producing hydrogen gas—and lots of it. Measurements from mine boreholes in Ontario show the gas can flow continuously for years, offering a potential new source of clean energy called “white hydrogen.” Researchers say this hidden resource could help power industries and remote communities while cutting carbon emissions and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
Scientists at the University of Houston have shattered a long-standing superconductivity record, creating a material that can conduct electricity with zero resistance at the highest temperature ever achieved under normal pressure conditions. Their breakthrough pushes superconductivity to 151 Kelvin (minus 122 °C), beating a record that stood for more than 30 years.
A breakthrough hydrogen-production method could make clean fuel far cheaper and easier to generate. Researchers at the University of Birmingham developed a perovskite-based catalyst that splits water into hydrogen at much lower temperatures than existing technologies, potentially allowing factories, steel plants, cement works, and renewable energy sites to turn waste heat into valuable hydrogen.
