Industry Information

Do you think Darth Vader worried about how to power the Death Star? Or was that responsibility delegated to a less Force-sensitive underling? Did the Empire use a microgrid? Which galactic EPC firm maintained the satellite’s hypermatter reactor? Did Emperor Palpatine push energy tax credit legislation through the Imperial Senate to grease the wheels of his contractors? Silly questions, perhaps. But the truth about powering future data centers is starting to sound as strange as science fiction.
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced up to $11.3 million in federal funding available to institutions of higher education, including up to $2.3 million exclusively for Tribal Colleges and Universities, to train the next generation of America’s energy workforce. The Partnerships for Academic-Industry Career Training (PACT) Initiative will facilitate the development of hands-on training and credentialing programs in skillsets supporting the production of natural gas, oil, coal, and geothermal energy by establishing regional academic-industry consortia.

The North American Electric Reliability Corp. on Monday issued a rare Level 3 alert—the watchdog’s highest level—following instances of data centers unexpectedly dropping load or oscillating demand rapidly, creating reliability concerns. The alert includes seven actions grid entities “must implement to address immediate risks posed by computational loads,” NERC said.
A decade ago, wind power was surging in popularity and attracting huge investments that made Texas a national leader in renewable energy. But today, gas generation is making a big comeback, driven by a wave of data centers flooding into the state. For the last six months, the volume of gas generation in the Texas grid’s interconnection queue—the years-long waiting list for electric generators wanting to connect to the grid—has surpassed wind.

“Global competitors are advancing the integration of nuclear propulsion into the broader maritime industry, including shipyards, ports, insurance regimes, and logistics networks, which places the US at a strategic disadvantage in the absence of domestic small modular reactor (SMR) development,” the Maritime Administration (MARAD) said.

Absent a longer-term deal on how to share a key but dwindling water source in the U.S. West, three states say they’ll cut back significantly to prop up reservoirs in a short-term agreement following the driest winter on record. Arizona, California, and Nevada announced a plan this month to save up to 1 million acre-feet (44 billion cubic feet) of Colorado River water through 2028.
For years, global LNG markets operated under a fairly comfortable assumption. Qatar would remain a stable supplier, the Middle East would continue functioning as the center of global LNG trade, and buyers in Europe and Asia could rely on long-term contracts to keep gas flowing. That assumption is now under pressure.

Amazon is backing 700 MW of new carbon-free generation and storage in Nevada to support future data center operations in the Reno area, including a 20-year geothermal power purchase agreement that would add firm, around-the-clock capacity to NV Energy’s system by 2030.

Utility-scale solar generation has been increasing steadily in ERCOT as solar capacity additions help meet rapid electricity demand growth. Although natural gas remains the dominant source of electricity generation in ERCOT, accounting for an average 44% of electricity generation from 2021 to 2025, solar’s share of the generation mix has increased from 4% to 12% in those years, while coal’s share has decreased from 19% to 13%.
HDR, RWE Clean Energy Deliver Solar Energy to California’s Grid
HDR Engineering, Inc®
Fifth Standard Solar and Battery Project adds utility-scale solar energy and battery energy storage to the power grid, supporting California’s goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions. Take a look inside the diverse project with stunning photos and a description detailing HDR’s role as owner’s engineer on the impactful EPC project.

Founded during Arizona’s copper mining boom long before statehood, APS has grown alongside the state it calls home – from a pioneering, locally rooted utility to serving more than 1.4 million homes and businesses with safe, reliable and affordable energy across Arizona’s vibrant and rapidly evolving communities. To honor that shared history, APS is celebrating by giving back to the state that has shaped the electric company for generations.
Salt River Project (SRP) announced an agreement with NextEra Energy Resources to develop 3,000 megawatts (MW) of new solar generation by the end of 2034, or enough capacity to power 595,000 Arizona homes. The solar development agreement will support SRP’s plan to more than double the capacity of its power system by 2035 while maintaining reliability and affordability and making continued progress toward its sustainability goals.

The California Independent System Operator (CAISO) and PacifiCorp have successfully launched EDAM, the Extended Day-Ahead Market. Through EDAM, millions of electricity consumers will benefit from coordinated day-ahead operations across the region. “Customers across the West are the big winners with today’s go-live, an innovative change to how we plan and deliver power across the region,” said Ryan Flynn, president of Pacific Power.
Basin Electric has earned a spot among the 2026 top 10 workplaces in Bismarck and Mandan, North Dakota, as recognized by the Young Professionals Network. To be considered for the award, employers must actively hire young professionals and implement strategies that support their growth and advancement in the workplace. Companies are also evaluated on the quality and range of benefits they provide.

Ashtrom Renewable Energy leaders were joined by members of CPS Energy, SOLV Energy, and elected officials as they broke ground on El Patrimonio, a new solar facility in Bexar County. Construction of the El Patrimonio Project began in 2025 and is expected to be completed in 2027. Once operational, the project is projected to supply electricity to approximately 37,000 households and reduce carbon emissions by about 193 tons annually.
Evergy, Inc. celebrated the start of construction on a new 710-megawatt (MW) combined-cycle natural gas plant in Sumner County, Kan. The company also announced the plant, which is expected to begin operating in 2029, will be named Chisholm Trail Energy Center. State lawmakers, Sumner County officials, and Evergy leadership attended the official groundbreaking.

Last year, TEP customers experienced just 42 minutes without power on average over the course of the year—a new TEP record. TEP uses this metric, the System Average Interruption Duration Index (SAIDI), to measure our reliability against other energy providers. For more than a decade, TEP's SAIDI scores have ranked among the top quartile of results aggregated annually by the Edison Electric Institute.
White Paper
Scientists have developed a fuel cell that uses microbes in soil to produce electricity. The device can power underground sensors for tasks like monitoring moisture or detecting touch without needing batteries or solar panels. It works in both dry and wet conditions and even lasts longer than similar technologies. This could pave the way for sustainable, low-maintenance sensors in farming and environmental monitoring.
Scientists are using sunlight to turn plastic waste into clean fuels like hydrogen, offering a breakthrough solution to both pollution and energy challenges. While still in development, the approach could transform trash into a valuable resource for a low-carbon future.
Cumberland, B.C., is reimagining its coal mining past as a clean energy opportunity. Water trapped in abandoned mine tunnels could be used in a geothermal system to heat and cool buildings efficiently and with minimal emissions. The project could lower energy costs, support new development, and attract businesses. It’s a striking example of turning industrial leftovers into a sustainable community asset.
