Industry Information
Administration opposition to wind and solar has gone against a global trend and has put many of the nation’s utilities in an awkward position. They know the incipient energy crisis facing the nation is not in fossil fuels, which are abundant, but in electricity, which is strained as demand has risen faster than the electric infrastructure—generating and transmission—can accommodate.
More people are falling behind on paying their bills to keep on the lights and heat their homes, according to a new analysis of consumer data—a warning sign for the U.S. economy. Past due balances to utility companies jumped 9.7% annually to $789 between the April-June periods of 2024 and 202. The increase has overlapped with a 12% jump in monthly energy bills during the same period.
U.S. data center power demand could reach 106 GW in 2035, BloombergNEF said in one of the more aggressive load growth estimates to date. The U.S. had about 25 GW of operating data centers in 2024, Bloom Energy said earlier this year. The latest forecast is 36% higher than its previous prediction, released in April.

Xcel Energy and its subsidiary Southwestern Public Service Company, together with Transource Energy, LLC, have been awarded the Beckham County–Potter 345 kilovolt (kV) transmission project by the Southwest Power Pool (SPP) Board of Directors. This project is a key component of SPP’s 2024 Integrated Transmission Planning Assessment, designed to strengthen the regional grid and support growing electricity demand.
Less than a year after elevating the city's clean energy future with the launch of its innovative Solar Standard Offer, Austin Energy is proud to showcase the initiative's first commercial project. Solar system owner Radial Power and contractor Axis Solar installed 812 warehouse rooftop solar panels, capable of generating nearly 660,000 kWh of solar power per year.
This summer, Basin Electric began the process of transitioning back to rate oversight by the Rural Utilities Service (RUS) instead of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). “This decision is due to a variety of factors, including access to low-interest funding from RUS,” Jim Horan, Basin Electric’s senior vice president and general counsel, said. “This is especially important as Basin Electric seeks to meet our growing capital needs to facilitate our projected load growth.”
White Paper
A new floating droplet electricity generator is redefining how rain can be harvested as a clean power source by using water itself as both structural support and an electrode. This nature-integrated design dramatically reduces weight and cost compared to traditional solid-based generators while still producing high-voltage outputs from each falling drop. It remains stable in harsh natural conditions, scales to large functional devices, and has the potential to power sensors, off-grid electronics, and distributed energy systems on lakes and coastal waters.
A nationwide analysis has uncovered how sprawling fossil fuel infrastructure sits surprisingly close to millions of American homes. The research shows that 46.6 million people live within about a mile of wells, refineries, pipelines, storage sites, or transport facilities. Many of these locations release pollutants that may affect nearby communities, yet mid-supply-chain sites have rarely been studied. The findings reveal major gaps in understanding how this hidden network affects health.
