In terms of risks to power grid reliability, the future of extreme weather is already here—yet it doesn’t fit the conventional pattern. In fact, to the casual observer, this new class of extreme weather might appear downright mundane.
As the global energy system adds more intermittent renewables, one fact is becoming increasingly clear: Affordable, large-scale energy storage remains the enabling holy grail for these clean energy sources. The reality is that power must be dispatchable.

The United States added more than 15 GW of new electricity generation resources between January and May this year, led by 11.5 GW of solar, followed by 2.3 GW of wind and 1.3 GW of gas, according to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s monthly infrastructure report.
Artificial intelligence may run on silicon chips, but its real fuel is electricity. After two decades of steady demand, AI and data centers are causing electricity consumption to soar, which will require utilities and tech giants to collaborate or confront each other. Either way, the aim is for the country to quickly upgrade its network to meet this AI-driven energy surge.
Growing international demand is causing natural gas prices to rise, which will in turn push U.S. electricity prices higher now that about 40% of U.S. generation comes from natural gas, according to the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis.

The energy cluster model would see large consumers take their electricity or heat directly from one or more co-located reactors, large or small. While the consumers benefit from energy that is more reliable, resilient, secure, and clean than grid supply, the nuclear developer would benefit from the simplified project finance that comes with having such committed partners.
As part of its long-standing commitment to responsible power and environmental restoration, Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association will transition to full reclamation of the Colowyo Mine, following the conclusion of coal production by the end of 2025.
Today, Arizona Public Service (APS), the City of Mesa, Salt River Project (SRP), Tucson Electric Power (TEP), and UniSource Energy Services announced commitment plans for Transwestern Pipeline’s Desert Southwest expansion project. This new natural gas pipeline will help maintain year-round regional energy reliability by transporting natural gas from the Permian Basin in West Texas to Arizona by late 2029, once construction is completed.

Lithium battery recycling offers a powerful solution to rising demand, with discarded batteries still holding most of their valuable materials. Compared to mining, recycling slashes emissions and resource use while unlocking major economic potential. Yet infrastructure, policy, and technology hurdles must still be overcome.
A Rochester team engineered a new type of solar thermoelectric generator that produces 15 times more power than earlier versions. By enhancing heat absorption and dissipation rather than tweaking semiconductor materials, they dramatically improved efficiency and demonstrated practical applications like powering LEDs.
In just one afternoon, scientists used a nanoparticle “megalibrary” to find a catalyst that matches or exceeds iridium’s performance in hydrogen fuel production at a fraction of the cost.
