Midway into 2022, however, rates are expected to turn upwards again as inflation begins to take a toll on the insurance market. The inflation rate in the United States in June was 9.1%—the highest level recorded since 1981.

On Tuesday, the National Labor Relations Board moved to make it easier for workers and unions to hold companies liable for labor law violations by their franchisees and contractors. The proposed rule would revive an Obama-era standard heavily criticized by trade groups that would treat companies as so-called "joint employers" when they have indirect control over working conditions such as scheduling, hiring and firing, and supervision.

A jury in Harris County returned a $48.5 million verdict in favor of Baylor College of Medicine (BCM), finding the insurers’ commercial property insurance policies covered losses due to COVID-19. According to the Baylor College of Medicine legal team, this was the first jury trial in the nation to tackle the issue of whether a commercial property insurance policy covered business interruption losses because of the pandemic.

The spike in natural disaster losses has resulted in much-needed judicial guidance on "Ordinance or Law" (O&L) Coverage, also known as "Code Upgrade" Coverage.
