Last December, the European Union’s Whistleblower Directive took effect. The mandate currently requires EU companies with more than 250 employees to implement effective internal mechanisms to enable employees to report and escalate concerns about corporate wrongdoing internally, and to prevent retaliation against them. In December 2023, the directive will expand to apply to businesses with as few as 50 employees.

Rate inadequacy has plagued the NFIP and Risk Rating 2.0 isn’t projected to change that in the near term. From 2014-2019, rates for the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) declined 9%, falling well below the 5% annual increases mandated by Congress, according to a review of NFIP data by Poulton Associates, LLC and HazardHub. The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday denied a lawsuit from an Oklahoma Goodwill branch seeking coverage for COVID-19 business income loss. Goodwill Industries of Oklahoma had sought to appeal its lawsuit against Philadelphia Indemnity Insurance Co. to the Supreme Court after a panel of the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals granted Philadelphia’s motion to dismiss in December 2021. The Supreme Court did not offer an explanation in its decision to deny the lawsuit.

For insurtech companies, the past year has been full of challenges, more so than many other areas of fintech. Funding for insurtech companies still grew in 2021– almost doubling from 2020 to reach $15 billion, according to CB Insights–but it expanded at a slower pace than the rest of fintech, which saw financing nearly triple over the same time period. In 2019, 19.7% of global business leaders felt highly confident in their organization’s core cyber risk management abilities. This has largely remained unchanged, according to a report from Marsh and Microsoft Corp., as only 19% of business leaders are highly confident in their cyber risk programs today. Rims Resources
