The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) received 76,418 individual charges of discrimination in its 2018 fiscal year alone. While this figure is a slight decrease from the previous year, the number is still significant and should prompt employers and risk managers to better protect their businesses by preparing to successfully resolve or avoid a discrimination charge filed by an employee.

Reputational risk carries legal jeopardy. And board members are sitting ducks, unprotected and vulnerable to attacks that could damage them personally and destroy their future earning potential. In the past 12 months, 25 complaints were filed or amended in federal court that alleged, at least in part, board-level responsibility in connection with corporate reputational damage. Only six such cases were filed in the preceding year.

Canada's economy is expected to pick up in the coming months after going through a bit of a cold spell. But risks both domestically and abroad could get things off-kilter, a recent report found. An upward trend for the economy would be a positive for the insurance industry, as Craig Pinnock, chief financial officer of Northbridge Financial Corporation, told Canadian Underwriter earlier this month.
