In late March, a jury in California held Meta and YouTube liable for millions of dollars in damages related to the allegedly addictive design of its social media platforms, Facebook and Instagram—a decision Meta has vowed to appeal. However, an earlier, separate decision related to that case is garnering attention for its insurance coverage implications.

A RIMS Riskworld panel said risk managers are increasingly expected to anticipate, quantify and reduce risk as part of broader business strategy — not just buy insurance. RIMS President Manny Padilla stressed the need to define organizational priorities before measuring results. Jennifer Pack of Hyatt Hotels said forecasting now draws on internal data, external analytics and industry intelligence. Chris de Wolfe of Mars argued that insurance should be a last resort, with mitigation and prevention taking priority. Franck Baron of International SOS said AI can sharpen risk analytics but adoption has been slow.

The FEMA Review Council has recommended overhauling the National Flood Insurance Program, calling for risk-based pricing, expanded private market participation and a take-out program to shift NFIP policies to private carriers, mirroring the Florida Citizens model. Equity analysts cited growth opportunities for flood insurance specialists if the recommendations move forward.

Aon's Joe Peiser said geopolitical volatility has become a baseline planning assumption for risk managers, not a tail risk. Aon said Hormuz shipping disruption is tightening capacity and lengthening placement timelines across marine, aviation, property, cyber and trade credit lines, with underwriters demanding stronger documentation on contingency planning and claims governance.

Cyber MGA Cowbell reports ransomware attacks rose 45% in 2025 while average ransom payments fell 44% since 2022, driven by stronger negotiation strategies, better incident response plans and backups that enable recovery without decryption keys. Data breaches, cybercrime and extortion events accounted for 83% of Cowbell's claims over 18 months; double-extortion and data-only schemes are now the dominant attack pattern.

Meteorologists are forecasting roughly 13 named Atlantic storms for 2026 — below last year's pace — but analysts warn that even a near-average season poses severe exposure to the U.S. power grid, which remains vulnerable to storm-driven outages that trigger long-tail business interruption and contingent liability claims.

Gallagher Re's 2025 Reinsurance Market Report shows global dedicated reinsurance capital hit a record $648 billion, up 11% year over year, with 76% of tracked reinsurers posting double-digit growth. Non-life alternative capital rose 18% to $135 billion — its strongest annual gain on record — while capital supply growth significantly outpaced demand, sustaining competitive conditions into 2026.

Pennsylvania sued Character Technologies Inc., maker of Character.AI, alleging its chatbots illegally impersonate licensed physicians and deceive users into believing they are receiving professional medical advice. The state's Commonwealth Court filing seeks an order barring the chatbots from practicing medicine. An investigator found characters describing themselves as licensed psychiatrists capable of conducting medical assessments. The case carries first-party liability implications for insurers deploying chatbots and third-party professional liability exposure for clients doing the same, and could help establish whether AI companies are shielded by federal internet liability law.

Mexico City is sinking nearly 10 inches per year — among the fastest subsidence rates of any major city on Earth, according to satellite imagery. The city of 22 million was built atop an ancient lake bed. A century of groundwater over-extraction has steadily compacted the clay-rich aquifer beneath it, fracturing roads, buildings and water lines. The airport and central districts are among the hardest-hit areas. Researchers say the data, captured between October 2025 and January 2026, gives officials the precision mapping needed to target infrastructure reinforcement and water management reforms.
