Risk Management Magazine (4/16/2026)
According to recent research from the National Apartment Association (NAA) and the National Multifamily Housing Council (NMHC), fraudulent applications, identity manipulation and increasing delinquency rates are creating operational strain and measurable financial and reputational risk for property stakeholders, from property managers to institutional investors. Some people view apartment rental fraud as an industry-specific problem affecting only individual tenants and their landlords, but the impact can be wide-ranging.

Strategic Risk (4/16/2026)
RIMS President Manny Padilla argues that risk managers have spent too long allowing the profession to be defined narrowly and must claim a more explicitly strategic role in their organizations. Padilla, vice president of risk management and insurance at MacAndrews & Forbes, says the field's core value lies in connecting siloed departments, translating complexity and protecting balance sheets — not just buying insurance. He identified geopolitics and supply chain opacity as the profession's most pressing near-term concerns.
The New York Times (4/16/2026)
A LaGuardia fire truck crew likely had severely limited visibility of the incoming Air Canada jet due to the taxiway's angled approach, which put the plane in the crew's right rear blind zone. The driver's view was further blocked by the second firefighter, who faced a known navigation phenomenon in which an object on a collision course appears stationary until it suddenly grows in size. Rain, nighttime glare and runway lights added visual clutter. The truck did not slow before entering the runway.
Reinsurance News (4/16/2026)
Catastrophe bond and insurance-linked securities issuance reached $6.7 billion in the first quarter of 2026, the second-largest Q1 in market history, with 35 transactions from repeat and three first-time sponsors. The outstanding cat bond market grew 4% from the end of 2025 to $63.9 billion, a quarterly record, though $7.3 billion in maturities are due through June.

Corporate Compliance Insights (4/15/2026)
As prediction market platforms Kalshi and Polymarket grow toward a likely Supreme Court battle over federal vs. state jurisdiction, compliance experts warn that insider trading-type risk now extends well beyond financial firms. A video producer at MrBeast's company was recently fired for trading on inside knowledge of upcoming posts, illustrating how far down the org chart the exposure reaches. Companies should review device usage policies, codes of conduct and NDAs before regulators force the issue.
Canadian Underwriter (4/15/2026)
Rising oil and gas prices stemming from the Iran conflict could replicate the inflationary supply chain conditions Canadian property and casualty insurers faced in 2022, a Swiss Re executive told the insurer's annual Canadian Insurance Outlook Breakfast. Higher energy costs threaten to push up claims and replacement values at a time when interest rates show little sign of declining.
Carrier Management (4/17/2026)
A 1-in-100-year hurricane striking New York City could generate more than $100 billion in insured losses, and a 1-in-250-year event could push that figure above $200 billion, according to catastrophe modeler Karen Clark & Co. New York carries nearly $9 trillion in insured property exposure, $6 trillion of it in coastal counties. KCC estimates that a repeat of the 1938 Great New England Hurricane would produce $20.5 billion in insured losses in New York alone at today's values.
Carrier Management (4/16/2026)
Property and casualty insurers are falling behind because their operating models cannot act on data or analytics insights fast enough in a rapidly shifting risk environment. Global insured losses hit roughly $127 billion in 2025, driven by severe convective storms and wildfires, compounding ongoing pressure from social inflation and liability volatility in casualty lines.
