Carrier Management (3/25/2026)
The U.S. P/C industry posted a $61 billion underwriting gain in 2025, nearly triple 2024's result, driven by a near-record low combined ratio of 92.6 and a 90% decline in hurricane-related claims. AM Best warns that the favorable conditions stemmed from unusually low catastrophe losses rather than structural improvement.
Canadian Underwriter (3/26/2026)
Intact Financial Corporation is prioritizing insurance product manufacturing and distribution businesses for future acquisitions, followed by global specialty lines in the U.S., U.K., Ireland and Canada, COO Patrick Barbeau said at a National Bank capital markets conference. Barbeau described the current M&A environment as more active than the prior 12 to 18 months and said Intact’s acquisition criteria remain unchanged: strategic fit first.
Business Insurance (3/26/2026)
A sharp slowdown in hiring — employers added just 116,000 jobs in 2025, the weakest pace outside a recession since 2003 — is creating a mixed workers compensation outlook, according to NCCI’s Q1 2026 economic briefing. Elevated wage growth has largely offset the employment decline in terms of premium volume, but NCCI flags geopolitical risks, worker tenure shifts and the narrowing of job gains to health care as factors that could further dampen comp market performance.

Strategic Risk (3/25/2026)
Senior market figures at Airmic's annual Captives Forum in London argued that captives are shifting from a hard-market pressure valve into a strategic tool for quantifying emerging risks and generating the data needed to build future insurance solutions. Speakers identified cyber, PFAS/forever chemicals, microplastics and non-damage business interruption — including infrastructure dependency risks tied to data center water supply — as the next wave of exposures likely to move into captives once they can be adequately quantified.
Insurance Journal (3/25/2026)
Insurers that adopted advanced analytics achieved combined ratios six points lower and premium growth three points higher than slower adopters between 2022 and 2024, according to WTW’s 2026 Advanced Analytics and AI Survey. Adoption is set to accelerate sharply, with 60% of insurers planning to prioritize AI-augmented underwriting by 2028, up from just 16% today.
Insurance Journal (3/25/2026)
AccuWeather’s first 2026 Atlantic hurricane season forecast calls for 11-16 named storms, four to seven hurricanes and two to four major hurricanes. The forecast is slightly below average, as El Niño development is expected to create wind shear that disrupts storm formation. However, warm Atlantic and Gulf waters and the historical precedent of 2023 — the last El Niño year producing 20 named storms — temper confidence in the below-average outlook.
Reinsurance News (3/25/2026)
Munich Re’s Cyber Insurance Risks and Trends 2026 report finds nearly 90% of C-level executives do not believe their company is adequately protected against cyberattacks, with ransomware, data breach, business email compromise and DDoS attacks driving the bulk of insured losses. Government entities were the most targeted sector in 2025 by a wide margin, followed by manufacturing and technology.
