On January 5, 2024, Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 was flying at 16,000 feet when a door plug blew off the Boeing 737 MAX 9 fuselage. The two seats adjacent to the opening were, by chance, unoccupied. That stroke of luck is the only reason this incident did not become another mass casualty event for Boeing, a company still recovering from two fatal crashes that killed 346 people.

President Trump directed the U.S. Development Finance Corporation to provide political risk insurance and financial guarantees for all maritime trade, expecially those moving through the Strait of Hormuz. Trump added that the Navy will escort tankers through the strait if necessary. Seven of the 12 International Group P&I Clubs had already withdrawn war risk coverage effective March 5.

U.S. financial services firms are stepping up monitoring for cyber threats following the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Morningstar DBRS warned that Iran could increase cyberattacks against Western entities, while Lazard's geopolitical team noted Iran has a demonstrated willingness to deploy cyber capabilities against commercial targets, including financial systems.

BofA projects agency organic revenue growth could slow from 3%-7% to 1%-5% as AI automates routine placement tasks.

A Delaware judge ruled Hartford, Chubb and more than 20 other insurers have no duty to defend Meta in thousands of lawsuits alleging its Facebook and Instagram platforms harm children. The judge ruled that  the conduct alleged — deliberately engineered addictive algorithms — constituted intentional acts and did not trigger coverage under commercial general liability policies. The ruling could set precedent for similar public nuisance litigation.

In January federal agents arrested two U.S. citizens in a Target store in Minnesota. The management's initital response was an internal memo citing regulatory compliance. Governance experts warn that meeting the legal minimum is not enough: boards must broaden their definition of worker safety to include psychological harm, and companies must have crisis communication plans ready before an incident occurs.
