What started as a business run by a single person, Emiel Lietaer, has now grown to become a family-run business that is becoming larger and larger and influences the markets around the world. Emiel was born in 1947 into a family of 8 successive generations of blacksmiths. He grew up around farm machinery, and he built up broad technical experience during practical training in a number of French and German machinery factories. Due to the revival of the garden culture in the 1970s, an expansion to the sale of garden machinery was quickly made. Emiel Lietaer came to realise that there were no tailor-made solutions at hand for many gardening problems, and, thanks to his creative mind and technical skills, the first ELIET machines were produced around 1980. The foundation for the machinery factory was in place. The great breakthrough came in 1986 with the participation in the International Agricultural Week at the Heysel in Brussels. The continuously growing demand for Eliet machines quickly obliged ELIET to make investments and to expand buildings and the headcount, a trend that continues.

California’s 2026 Minimum Wage Increases to $16.90 Per Hour

On August 1, the California Department of Finance Director Joe Stephenshaw officially certified that beginning January 1, 2026, California’s minimum wage will increase to $16.90 per hour for all employers, regardless of size.

Under California Labor Code section 1182.12, the California Director of Finance must determine on or before August 1 of each year whether to adjust the minimum wage for inflation and, if so, calculate the increase.The director calculates the increase by applying whichever of the following two options would result in the smaller increase:

A 3.5 percent increase; or
The actual rate of change per the U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI).
For the 12-month period from July 1, 2024, to June 30, 2025, the department’s calculations showed that the CPI increased by 2.49 percent compared to the 12-month period from July 1, 2023, to June 30, 2024, meaning the minimum wage will increase by 2.49 percent — to $16.90 per hour — on January 1, 2026.

How Will We Grade Gen Z on a Construction Curve?

Construction Equipment Magazine recently posted an article by Frank Raczon on how Gen Z employees might fare in the construction industry. Gen Z is widely considered to be those born from 1997 to 2012; and a general workplace survey gives the group low marks.

According to the article, many employers have found that a large percentage of Gen Z employees lack soft skills, have difficulty communicating, and need to know the exact reasons they’re being asked to do x, y, and z before being willing to do the tasks.

Soft skills consist of a combination of people, social, and communication skills, character traits, attitudes, and mindsets, as well as social and emotional characteristics, among others, which are sought for in all professions. Some examples of soft skills include: communication, teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving.

“Soft skills are incredibly important when you work with other colleagues, provide a service to customers, or have to answer to a manager or boss,” says Barry Garapedian, president of MAG 7 Consulting, who specializes in helping young adults get workplace ready.

The firm Resume Templates.com recently surveyed 1,000 managers in the U.S. and found that supervising Gen Z employees feels like parenting or babysitting and Gen Zers struggle to follow basic instructions and require hand-holding. Nine in 10 of the managers have had to teach Gen Z foundational workplace skills, such as accepting feedback without taking it personally, interacting appropriately with clients and coworkers, multitasking effectively, admitting mistakes professionally, and dressing appropriately for work. Managers also report having to regularly remind Gen Z employees to arrive on time, respond to messages, put away their phones, and clean up after themselves. One in three managers surveyed reports they have to check in with their Gen Z employees four or more times per day.

Raczon points out that people and communication skills are very important in dealing with experienced workers in the construction industry. In construction, a young person or rookie in a crew will catch a lot of ribbing and might also have to point out the correct and safe use of equipment. Gen Zers will need the people skills and ability to communicate clearly with fellow employees. So, for working in construction, Raczon’s advice for GenZers is that if you’re on board to do things right and communicate clearly, a great career in construction is possible—just remember to look people in the eye when you talk to them, shake hands firmly, and get off the phone.

Understanding Subrogation Rights in California Workers’ Compensation

Subrogation is a legal principle that allows an employer or its workers’ compensation insurer to recover costs from a third party responsible for an employee’s injury. In California, this process is governed by Labor Code Section 3850, which grants employers and insurers the right to seek reimbursement for benefits paid to an injured worker.
How Subrogation Works
When an employee is injured due to a third party’s negligence, they may file a personal injury lawsuit against that party while also receiving workers’ compensation benefits. However, if the worker successfully recovers damages from the third party, the employer or insurer can assert a lien on the settlement or judgment to reclaim the benefits already paid. This prevents the worker from receiving double compensation for the same injury.

California Regulators Move to Roll Back Parts of Controversial Clean Truck Rule

California plans to erase parts of a rule created to clean up the state’s dirty air from truck pollution. The action comes in response to a lawsuit from the California Trucking Association and strong headwinds from the Trump administration. The Advanced Clean Fleet rule, adopted in 2023, would have phased out diesel trucks used by large companies, state and local governments, as well as ports and railroad yards. It would have eliminated new gas-fueled truck sales by 2036 and mandated that large trucking fleets go electric or hydrogen-powered by 2042.

In response to the trade group’s lawsuit, the California Air Resources Board plans to propose repealing parts of the rule that applies to trucks serving ports, rail yards, and large companies this year. California’s requirements that state and local governments increasingly move towards all-electric vehicles — and that all new truck sales be electric by 2036 — will remain, so long as the federal government approves that policy.
