Meeting and Event News

November came in with cooler weather, but that did not stop CRA members from participating in the Pre-Golf Wiest Rental Yard Party in Riverside. Excavator golf and cornhole added additional fun and competition. The Wiest family were gracious hosts with a delicious catered meal of tacos.

The next day everyone converged on the Eagle Glen Golf Club in Corona, which featured a newly remodeled clubhouse, new golf carts and some renovated greens. There was no shortage of wildlife, with deer, rabbits, roadrunners, a fox and many other animals spotted around the course. A good time was had by all, with a tequila tasting, cigar bar, ball drop (with the help of Snorkel), and closest-to-the-hole contests as well as the always-fun raffle, with many items from RSIF and our GREAT vendors.

And thank you to our last-minute hole sponsor, SkyJack!

All proceeds from the Golf Tournament help to fund CRA's Rental Services Industry Foundation (RSIF), whose mission is "To provide funding for those activities that perpetuate the rental services industry concept and to provide emergency relief to industry members."

Noise-induced hearing loss is one of the greatest occupational health threats in the United States — a silent threat that can go unnoticed because it develops over time, shows no visible effects and, except in very rare cases, is not accompanied pain. Approximately 30 million workers face occupational exposure to noise levels that could damage their hearing. Noise isn’t the only source of occupational hearing loss, however. Occupational exposure to chemicals and metals puts an additional 9 million at risk. At present exposure limits, 1 in 4 will develop a permanent hearing loss as a result of their occupational exposure to these hazards.

The Center for Jobs and the Economy has Released Their Initial Analysis of the September Employment Report from the California Employment Development Department

Recovery Progress: The September numbers show continued weakening in the state’s recovery progress, with nonfarm job numbers essentially at a stall and employment numbers posting a contraction for the second month in a row. The national numbers, in contrast, posted employment levels above the pre-COVID peak in February 2020 for the first time, while continuing a three-months long jobs expansion beyond that benchmark. Compared to the February 2020 pre-pandemic peaks, California was still 0.1% short of the recovery mark for nonfarm wage and salary jobs and backslid to 1% short for employment.

California nonfarm gains were only 6,500 — the 14th highest among the states and the lowest monthly gain since the loss posted in September 2021. Nationally, job gains were led by Florida (48,800), Texas (40,000) and North Carolina (17,400). Over the prior 12 months, California (712,600) remained in second place behind Texas (721,800). California’s gains, however, constitute jobs recovery from the series of state-ordered shutdowns. Texas and 22 other states are instead now growing beyond their pre-COVID peaks.

In the employment numbers, California edged down to 35th highest among the states when measured by a return to the pre-pandemic employment peak, while 28 states, again, had more people working than prior to the pandemic, providing the workforce essential to expanding jobs. The state’s unemployment rate improved to 3.9%, the 15th highest among the states and Washington, D.C. Overall, 36 states, including California, had unemployment rates at or below the February 2020 level.
Accepting Applications Now

The Sac Metro Air District released more than $22 million for new applications under its Low-Emission Vehicle Incentive Program to fund zero-emission trucks and buses, clean farm equipment, electric-vehicle (EV) charging stations and other innovative mobile-source projects. Using the state’s Carl Moyer Program guidelines, the district’s new online application system will promote investments in cleaner equipment for small businesses, community fleets and all other applicants. Projects, including EV chargers for commercial applications, zero-emission school buses, clean farm-equipment replacement, and locomotives, are priority for this round of funding. The district is also soliciting applications from other sources as detailed in its application manual. Click on "Learn more" to visit their website where you can apply for funding or review further details about the guidelines and recorded workshops.
California Likely to Remain in Fifth Place – But When Cost-of-Living is Taken Into Account, the State Falls to 11th

In an Oct. 24 article, the California Business Rountable commented on recent reports, including an opinion piece from Bloomberg, which argues that California is poised to become the fourth-largest economy in the world. However, the data shows that California will likely remain in fifth place, which it achieved not through growth of the state economy but rather through contraction of the UK economy, in the wake of Brexit.

The Oct. 2022 World Economic Outlook Database from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and California Data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) show that California is still in fifth place. In fact, California’s economy would have to grow by more than a quarter to overtake Germany. While Germany is expected to contract in 2022, largely due to high energy prices, it is expected to rebound in 2023. California’s numbers are projected based on the annual growth rate in Q2 2022.

However, California’s competitiveness is hampered by its ongoing cost-of-living crisis. While the state’s GDP might be higher, the high (and growing) costs of housing, energy, food and other essentials means the dollar does not go as far as it does in other countries. Using the same sources and adjusting California’s GDP based on the BEA regional price-parity index, GDP by purchasing parity sinks California to 11th place, struggling to stay above Turkey.
Proposition 30 would have increased the state income tax by an additional 1.75% on income above $2 million for individuals, with most of the money going toward building charging stations and helping people buy electric cars. However, California’s wealthiest residents won’t see a tax increase after voters rejected the proposition on Nov. 8.

Proposition 30′s defeat marks a win for Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom, who campaigned against it despite his administration’s moves to ban the sale of most new gas-powered cars in the next decade. Newsom branded the tax as a taxpayer-funded giveaway to rideshare companies, which under California regulations must ensure nearly all trips booked through their services are zero-emission by 2030. The rideshare company Lyft supplied most of the "yes" campaign’s funding.
