Seventy percent of employers report mental health challenges among their employees, 52% report substance misuse or addiction, and 72% say mental health stigma blocks care. These are some of the findings in new research provided by The Hartford, a workers' compensation insurance company. While the national study showed employers have strived to support workforce well-being and foster a more compassionate workplace, employers and workers are divided in key areas about mental health in the workplace:

Eighty percent of employers said their company culture has been more accepting of mental health challenges in the past year, but only 59% of workers agree. Seventy-nine percent of employers said they have an open and inclusive environment that encourages a dialogue about mental health, compared to 52% of workers who agree. Seventy-seven percent of employers said leadership at their company encourages conversations about mental health, compared to 56% of workers who agree. And 78% of employers said workers have flexibility in their schedule to get the mental health help they need, but just 58% of employees agree about this flexibility.

These divergent perceptions indicate the pervasiveness and power of stigma as well as the continued need for education and communication about mental illness and addiction.

This year, family-owned custom truck equipment and trailer manufacturer Ledwell celebrates their 75th year in business. Headquartered in Texarkana, Texas, the company was founded in 1946 by Buddy Ledwell and his father. After returning from WWII, Buddy and his father L.W. Ledwell Sr. started a lumber company called Ledwell & Son. One day Buddy needed a certain kind of trailer to haul lumber, so he rolled up his sleeves and welded the frame he needed to get the job done. A neighboring farmer saw the trailer and asked, “Where’d you get that? I need one!” So, Buddy built it for him. Today, Ledwell builds custom trailers and truck bodies for just about every industry—from water and feed trucks to hydraulic trailers and vacuum—for customers all over the world. If a need arises for a truck or trailer to perform a job or haul a particular piece of equipment or product, Ledwell finds a way to create a solution.

Regulatory Up-date: CARB is working on a rule to eliminate all forklifts with internal combustion engines because of the Governor’s executive order. Their current timeline is to have the rule designed and submitted to the CARB Board in seven months. The California propane industry is actively opposing this since propane is cleaner for the environment than electricity. We need your help!
Rob Lapsley, president of the California Business Roundtable, which led the fight to defeat Proposition 15, the $12 billion split-roll tax increase on the November 2020 ballot, issued the following statement in response to a new split-roll ballot measure submitted today to the Attorney General:

“The voters of California already made their position on higher taxes clear last year when they defeated Proposition 15, the largest property tax increase in California history. Today, all Californians continue to pay the highest cost of living while businesses are struggling with a sluggish recovery, a crippling labor shortage and a new tax increase to pay off the massive state-created debt in the Unemployment Insurance Fund. While California needs housing reforms to increase supply and improve affordability, a huge tax increase on homeowners, small business owners and renters is not a solution. We are ready to mobilize our broad coalition to once again defeat this measure in 2022.”
