It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Bob Shipley, a Rental Pioneer and the founder of F&B Rentals. He is the father of current CRA Board Member Rob Shipley. Born James Robert Shipley on August 19th, 1934, Bob passed peacefully with his family at his side on Feb. 24th, 2019, in Riverside, CA.

Bob opened F&B Rentals—the “F” for Fran and “B” for Bob—in 1975. He eventually sold the business to his son Rob in 1988. Rob and his wife Jessica, along with  Bob’s grandchildren, Alberto Pianelli, Carisa Pianelli, and Jacob Shipley, continue to make sure that F&B Rentals will always be Family Owned & Operated.

Cybersecurity is the protection of computer systems from theft or damage to their hardware, software or electronic data, as well as from disruption or misdirection of the services they provide. CRA thanks Gabe Marquez from the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) for his contribution of a series of articles on Cybersecurity. He received the articles from a presentation given by FBI Agent Scott Augenbaum during the 2018 National Cargo Theft Summit. All articles are available to view at www.CalRental.org in the Cybersecurity section on the Public Resources tab. Over the next several months we will be presenting a different article. This month we have an article about How to Protect Your Networks From Ransomware.
Odds are workplace injuries won’t happen — yet they do. The odds can be lowered considerably by taking control of the work environment and ensuring employees perform the job the right way. Do you know that your odds of winning the lottery do not change based on the number of tickets purchased? You are playing the odds based on your number selection, not on the number of players participating. Safety works in somewhat the same way. It doesn’t matter how many employees might “forget” to use safety equipment without suffering consequences. All it takes is one employee to forget at the wrong time.

The first job killer bill identified by the California Chamber of Commerce this year passed an Assembly committee this week. AB 51 (Gonzalez; D-San Diego) prohibits arbitration of labor and employment claims as a condition of employment. The bill is virtually identical to 2018 legislation, AB 3080 (Gonzalez; D-San Diego), which was vetoed by Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. because he recognized that the measure plainly violated federal law. The bill also is similar to AB 465 (R. Hernández; D-West Covina), which was vetoed in 2015. AB 51 is a job killer due to the significant increased costs employers will face as a result of more litigation and the expense of delayed dispute resolutions.

He is the founder and chief executive officer of MultiFunding LLC, a Philadelphia based consulting firm that specializes in helping business owners across the United States develop creative, cost-saving alternatives for their business debt needs and structure. For over twenty years he has challenged people to think differently about their businesses and educated them on how to responsibly use leverage to create wealth. As the “go-to” thought leader in business financing, Ami is frequently quoted in national media and is a sought-after speaker at business and industry events across the country. He writes a weekly column for Inc. Magazine and has advised the White House, the Treasury Department and the Federal Reserve Bank.
Joel Fox, Editor and Co-Publisher of Fox and Hounds Daily, recently discussed tax increase proposals aimed at increasing revenues to pay for the Los Angeles school strike settlement. According to Fox, the plan apparently is to largely target business, which will add to the perception that Los Angeles and California are not business friendly. Two types of property taxes are aimed at raising school revenue, one weighted toward business, the second aimed exclusively at business.
The U.S. average retail price for regular gasoline on March 4, 2019, was $2.42 per gallon (gal), an increase of 11 cents/gal from the February average of $2.31/gal and 14 cents/gal lower than the price at the same time last year. Most of the fluctuation is the result of changes in crude oil price.
