GPS Systems

Thank you to all those who take time to participate in our surveys. CRA utilizes the information we gather to better serve you. If you have an idea for a survey for CRA members, please send your request to CRA at Info@CalRental.org for consideration. This month, we surveyed members about their GPS systems.
 
1. What type of rental business do you have?
General Rental: 50% (10 responses)

2. If you are using a GPS system, what system are you using?
Crossbow: 6% 1 responses)
GPS Trackit: 0% (0 responses)
GPS Insight: 0% (0 responses)
Live View GPS: 0% (0 responses)

1. Rovi Tracker.
2. We have Crossbow 1 & 2 and SVR systems.
3. Only what the manufacturers have installed (Yanmar).

7. Fleetmatics. On our delivery trucks, not on any rental equipment. Ties into our Alert software; fully
integrated with routes we establish in dispatch program. We send signal to GPS unit in truck and
route is loaded with turn by turn directions. Live time view shows location of all trucks, and
separate screen with schedule shows red check marks in live time as each stop is completed.

13. What is a "GPS" system and what does it do? This survey probably does not apply to some of our
members.

3. Are you happy with the performance of your GPS system as well as its reliability?
Yes: 82% (9 responses)

Additional comments:
1. No, poor service, reliablity, unit not water proof.
2. NO.
3. Two "yes’s" I mean "no" our shop and dispatch departments are looking at another less expensive
and easier unit.
4. There were two "Yes" answers to this question. Is one supposed to be a "No"? (Yes, there should have been a "Yes" and "No." Our apologies!)

4. Are you happy with the cost associated with the monitoring of your equipment?
Yes: 79% (11 responses)
No: 21% (3 responses)

1. Comes with the machine for first 5 years, then 100/yr after that.

5. If you are looking at changing GPS providers, who would you select to be your provider and why?
1. Yes, reasons given above.
2. No.
3. Anyone that works with the POR software system.
4. Like I wrote previously, our shop is looking into a replacement.

6. What is your cost per GPS that your company is paying annually?
$100 - $150: 58% (7 responses)
$150 - $200: 17% (2 responses)
$200 + : 25% (3 responses)
Additional comments:
1. $50.00 per year, $275 upfront purchase.
2. Again, this is live tracking for each our delivery trucks and has significant data collection, i.e., speed,
time at each stop, when truck is idling/in motion. We can set boundaries and receive notifications if
truck is off route or exceeding speed limit. We also load service records in file and set notifications
for service intervals.

7. How are you communicating with your customers the new privacy information?

3. As to the use of GPS, it doesn’t relate to our customer. Our staff know we have it; as such I think it
helps keep them on task because they know they vehicle is being tracked! Also, since
implementing we have magically stopped getting the "your driver is speeding like a bat out of hell"
calls.

8. Have there been any recoveries that you can attribute to having GPS on your equipment?
Yes: 43% (6 responses)
No: 57% (8 responses)
Additional comments:
1. Multiple occasions.
2. Have not had any of our vehicles stolen, so NO. However there is comfort knowing we will be able
to track the vehicle IF something were to happen.
3. N/A.

9. How many recoveries can you attribute to having GPS on your equipment?
1. At least 10.
2. Two.
3. Four in the last two years, also the ability to track down a customer to collect money when they get behind in payments.
4. Two that I’m aware of.
5. One.
6. Two recoveries and one no deductible.

10. Additional survey comments:
1. This is one thing we should use the buying power of our association to get a better deal for all interested parties.
