The federal government announced significant commitments to infrastructure, housing, and productivity in the its 2025 budget.

“The global uncertainty we are facing demands bold action to secure Canada’s future. Budget 2025 is an investment budget. We are making generational investments to meet the moment and ensure our country doesn’t just weather this moment but thrives in it. This is our moment to build Canada Strong and our plan is clear – we will build our economy, protect our country, and empower you to get ahead. When we play to our strengths, we can create more for ourselves than can ever be taken away,” said François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Finance and National Revenue.

The Canadian Construction Association (CCA) is among several industry organizations to heap praise on the federal budget.

In particular, the association has commended the government's $115-billion investment in infrastructure, including $51 billion for local infrastructure such as housing and transportation, which will support communities across Canada and enable the ambitious homebuilding agenda.

"Canada has underinvested in critical infrastructure for decades," said CCA president Rodrigue Gilbert. "These investments reflect the essential role of housing-enabling infrastructure in addressing the national housing shortage and committing substantial resources to these projects."

The association also welcomed the announced investment for the Major Projects Office, and the recognition within the budget that "for too long, the construction of major infrastructure in Canada has been stalled by arduous, inefficient approval processes."

Ontario is set to table a fiscal update Thursday that is expected to focus in part on infrastructure and protecting jobs, while this week's federal budget has renewed calls for the province to boost post-secondary funding.

Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy said Wednesday that Ottawa's financial plan "lacks some ambition," particularly in infrastructure spending and insulating workers from the impacts of U.S. tariffs.

"I've had people, workers, asking me, 'What's in the budget for Oshawa? What's in it for Windsor, if you're out of a job or being challenged in the auto sector?'" Bethlenfalvy said. "There isn't much there."

Within the Enbridge Damage Prevention department, the team is always trying to come up with creative solutions to reduce gas line damages. One consistent trend we observe is a higher rate of damage from sewer and water work. Jason Syragakis came up with a creative challenge for a Toronto-based sewer and water contractor, CG Construction Services Ltd., to complete one full year of ground disturbance with no gas line damages. This was a lofty target given the volume and scope of the projects CG Construction Services was undertaking in 2024.

In coordination with our Damage Prevention Inspectors conducting regular proactive site meets, contractor safe excavation presentations, and on-site support requests, CG Construction Services- Frank Gazze and his team were successful in having zero gas line damages in 2024. In recognition of this achievement, a BBQ breakfast was held at CG Construction Services head office with the Enbridge Community Events Team and Enbridge Damage Prevention Toronto team, to showcase CG Construction's exemplary work, dedication to damage prevention, and attention to safety. Congratulations to the CG Construction team for a successful 2024. Special thanks to the Enbridge Damage Prevention Toronto team: Jason Syragakis, Matthew Butler, Matthew Prentice for making this a reality!
