Given the mounting pressure around eliminating plastic straws, with Seattle even becoming the first U.S. city to ban them July 1, Starbucks recognized it was time to act. The chain announced it plans to phase out plastic straws from its more than 28,000 restaurants worldwide by 2020—a move that would eliminate more than 1 billion straws per year from the marketplace.
