Exciting news regarding the reclassification of public safety telecommunicators! On April 30, the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation voted to advance the bipartisan Enhancing First Response Act (S.725) to the full Senate for consideration. APCO CEO Mel Maier celebrated the move, saying, “the committee’s vote marks an important step forward. We urge the full Senate as well as the House of Representatives to act quickly to grant public safety telecommunicators the recognition they deserve.” Read more

On April 28, APCO urged the FCC to retain important public safety requirements in the face of requests for deregulation in the FCC’s “In re Delete, Delete, Delete” proceeding, which seeks public feedback on rules the FCC should eliminate. While APCO recognizes the FCC’s interest in removing unnecessary regulatory burdens, APCO urges the FCC to retain important public safety regulations that promote the public interest. Read more

APCO is launching new monthly topics for the Illuminations CDE Program. Illuminations offers subscription tracks to help public safety communications professionals stay current while earning CDEs. Starting June 1, the General Track includes topics such as call-handling complacency and preparation for large outdoor public gatherings, plus 10 additional monthly topics throughout the year. The EMD Track features topics that include recognizing chest pain, explosive injuries and other critical subjects. An annual subscription consists of 12 courses, each worth one CDE.
