The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), in coordination with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), will conduct a nationwide test of the Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) and Emergency Alert System (EAS) on October 4 at approximately 2:20 p.m. The WEA portion of the test will be transmitted to all members of the public who have a WEA-capable mobile device and are within a participating wireless service provider’s network. The EAS test will be conducted with radio and television broadcasters, including satellite radio. Both tests will feature language indicating the alert is only a test and no action is needed. Any member of the public who experiences anomalies with receipt of the alert, such as a significant delay in the presentation of the message, duplicate test messages or other complications can inform the FCC by contacting the Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau’s Public Safety Support Center. More information on the testing can be found online.

APCO is accepting applications until October 15 for the Certified Public-Safety Executive (CPE) Program, scheduled to begin in January 2024. The CPE Program equips participants with vital leadership skills to guide public safety agencies today and in the future. Topics explored during the six-month program include leadership styles, public safety leadership issues, and executing and managing change. The CPE Program is competitive, and space is limited. For more details and to apply visit the CPE Program page.
