After an exhaustive and competitive nationwide search involving more than 200 applicants, APCO is proud to announce the appointment of Mr. Melvin (Mel) Maier as its new executive director. Maier currently serves as APCO’s chief technology officer and brings more than 33 years of dedicated public safety service to his new role. He worked as a law enforcement officer for 32 years and was the captain and chief of public safety communications for the Oakland County (MI) Sheriff’s Office before joining APCO in March 2022.

On June 26, APCO filed an opposition to a petition filed by the Competitive Carriers Association (CCA) asking the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to reconsider recently adopted rules regarding the notifications service providers are required to send emergency communications centers (ECCs) when a 9-1-1 outage occurs. Among other things, CCA asked that rather than requiring service providers to notify ECCs within 30 minutes of discovering an outage, the FCC should give service providers more flexibility in how quickly they notify ECCs. In its opposition, APCO explained that the FCC had already addressed CCA’s arguments when it adopted the rules and reiterated the importance of ensuring that service providers promptly notify 9-1-1 centers of outages that may impact them.

 

Two new topics begin on August 1 in APCO’s Illuminations CDE Program subscription. The general track session on human trafficking focuses on the indicators telecommunicators need to be aware of. The EMD track takes a deeper look at EMD cards and evolving medical emergencies. Earn up to 12 CDEs for recertification with new topics introduced monthly.
