On February 16, APCO filed comments with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in support of proposed rules to require wireless carriers to provide location-based routing, which means routing 9-1-1 calls based on the location of the caller instead of the cell tower transmitting the call. Location-based routing will reduce the occurrence of misroutes, which will reduce delays in emergency response and save lives. APCO also addressed several misunderstandings related to NG9-1-1 and encouraged the FCC to adopt a definition of NG9-1-1 that aligns with public safety’s vision of an end-to-end, interoperable system.

National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week is April 9-15, and it's time for the 2023 NPSTW contest! This year we want to know who is your sidekick or super team?

Most superheroes don’t have to go it alone. Some have a sidekick, or maybe they are part of a super team. Fortunately, most public safety telecommunicators don’t have to go it alone either. Is there someone who always has your back on the tough calls? Or maybe someone who can make you laugh on the longest days? Or maybe your shift works like magic to save lives and protect first responders. The partner to your headset hero could even be a friend or family member outside the ECC who can help you decompress and enjoy that side of your life. Enter the contest for the chance to win $100 for your ECC. The deadline is April 16.

On February 16, APCO posted a blog with high-level talking points concerning APCO’s top legislative priorities: securing federal funding for Next Generation 9-1-1; correcting the federal classification of public safety telecommunicators and supporting wellness programs in ECCs. APCO’s government relations team is available to assist with additional prep and meeting follow-up as well. Contact gro@apcointl.org.

Cybersecurity Fundamentals for the ECC will take place on Saturday, August 5, at APCO 2023 in Nashville, Tennessee. Led by a cybersecurity expert, topics addressed include why emergency communications centers are a target, how to protect your ECC, signs of an ongoing cyberattack, mitigation techniques and more. The course is worth 8 CDEs.
