The APCO scholarship program is now open and accepting applications. This opportunity is exclusive for members, and awards can be used toward all APCO Institute training, including the RPL and CPE programs. The deadline to apply for CPE scholarships is February 15; all other scholarship applications are due March 31.

The father called 9-1-1 and talked to the public safety telecommunicator as members of the police and fire department raced to the scene in sub-zero temperatures. The baby and mother were later listed in good condition at the hospital.

On January 19, APCO filed comments regarding a Petition filed by the National Association of State 9-1-1 Administrators asking the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to facilitate the transition to Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1). APCO’s comments begin by explaining the challenges 9-1-1 professionals face in the current environment. To address these problems, APCO asks the FCC to adopt rules that would require service providers to provide interoperable solutions and use the caller’s location to improve call routing. APCO also advocated that the FCC’s regulatory approach should avoid shifting responsibility and costs from service providers to ECCs.

APCO has filed a Project Initiation with ANSI for the creation of a candidate standard titled Common Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) Public Safety GIS Identifiers. The call for participation will begin in February 2022.

Public safety agencies use the APCO International Agency Training Program Certification as a formal mechanism to ensure their training programs meet APCO American National Standards (ANS). Initial and continuing training for public safety telecommunicators is important as they provide essential services to the public in an expanding and rapidly changing environment.
