APCO recently filed formal petitions with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regarding a major change it made to regulations that govern the use of spectrum in the 6 GHz band. Public safety agencies extensively use the 6 GHz band for mission critical systems that support operational needs such as dispatching first responders and maintaining land mobile radio communications during incidents. Under the FCC’s new rules, hundreds of millions of unlicensed devices could be introduced that present a risk of harmful interference to public safety’s systems. APCO urged the FCC to halt implementation of the rules and put effective mechanisms in place to prevent and quickly eliminate interference.

Read APCO’s petitions. The APCO Government Relations Office has also written a TableTopX blog post describing the issues.
