APCO submitted comments in response to the FCC's Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on improving interoperability and reliability for NG9-1-1 systems. APCO emphasized the need for a comprehensive, technology-neutral and forward-looking approach that promotes innovation and flexibility in NG9-1-1 deployments and avoids forcing one-to-one comparisons between legacy and NG9-1-1 infrastructure. APCO reiterated the importance of addressing interoperability and recommended the use of both conformance testing that remains technology-neutral and focused on commonly accepted standards, and interoperability testing that reflects real-world situations and applies to all forms of 9-1-1 traffic to ensure interoperability for NG9-1-1. APCO also expressed general support for extending reliability requirements to NG9-1-1 networks. Learn more

This webinar explores how ECCs can use AI to automate non-emergency call handling to reduce telecommunicator burnout and improve response to actual emergencies. Featuring insights from MACC 911 and Saginaw County, two of the first ECCs in the country to implement this technology, the session will cover what call types can be safely automated, what to expect during rollout and how automation is helping agencies better serve their communities. This webinar is designed for agencies just starting to explore automation, as well as those ready to take the next step. Register

APCO is seeking comments on the candidate American National Standard (ANS) Non 9-1-1 Call Processing and Dispatch. This standard will guide emergency communications center (ECC) leaders in developing and implementing policies, procedures and written protocols to address concerns and hesitations regarding interactions between ECCs and external call centers.
The public may review and comment on this candidate standard until September 8 via the APCO website. For questions, email standards@apcointl.org or contact (888) 272-6911. Learn more

APCO sent a letter congratulating Arielle Roth on her confirmation as assistant secretary of commerce for communications and information. In this role Roth will serve as administrator of the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), which plays a key role in advancing public safety communications, particularly in managing federal spectrum use and supporting the nationwide implementation of NG9-1-1. APCO looks forward to working closely with Assistant Secretary Roth and NTIA on critical priorities, including NG9-1-1 deployment, effective spectrum policy and ensuring the continued success and reauthorization of FirstNet. The FCC has released a fact sheet to raise awareness of the 9-1-1 requirements for multi-line telephone systems (MLTS). In 2019, the FCC adopted rules that require MLTS, such as those used in schools, hotels and office buildings, to support direct 9-1-1 dialing (meaning the capability to reach 9-1-1 without first dialing a prefix, such as "9"), provide location information with the 9-1-1 call, and send notifications to a central location when 9-1-1 is dialed. The FCC's fact sheet helps clarify these requirements for MLTS managers, operators and installers, and includes helpful resources to support education and compliance. The fact sheet is part of a broader initiative to ensure the MLTS requirements are implemented as intended and deliver meaningful benefits to 9-1-1. Read more
