Yankee Head Insulation Projects Cut Mill Energy Costs

PMT Italia, Italy, reports that, to date, it has installed head insulation on six Yankee dyers as part of a contract it previously announced, involving the design, manufacture, and installation of head insulation on 12 Yankee dryers in various countries of South America. The six installation so far have resulted in steam energy savings between 6% and 12%, exceeding expectations. In addition to the energy savings achieved, the average initialization time was reduced by some 18 hr.

Martin Cunliffe, PMT’s site supervisor, noted that "we were very pleased with the turnaround time, especially as all of the machines were different with bespoke design insulations. The 12 Yankee’s involved were supplied by five different OEM’s, including Voith, Carcano, Hergan, Beloit and PMT."

With the high energy costs in Europe today, Yankee head insulation has become a "must have" item with most returns on investment being less than 12 months, according to PMT. Clive Butler, PMT’s engineering manager, added that "mills are realizing that this energy saving exercise is a quick and simple solution with a short ROI. This has been proved with the eight more orders we have received this year for installation in Europe."
