MPM Starts up New Tissue Line in Syria

Mediterranean Paper Mills (MPM), Syria, has started up the new Toscotec, Italy, tissue line installed at the Jableh, Lattakia mill in Syria. Before installation of the new machine, MPM was producing and converting some 3.500 metric tpy of toilet, facial, and napkin tissue for the local market.

To better serve the growing Syrian market in terms of quantity and quality, the company says it decided to replace the old, existing TM 1 fourdrinier machine with a new generation line. The new Toscotec MODULO crescent former features a single layer headbox, single press configuration, and Steel Yankee Dryer TT SYD 3200 MM. The scope of supply also included the approach flow system, upgrading of the existing stock preparation plant, steam heated hood, steam and condensate system, and electrification and control. Additionally, the project involved dismantling of the existing paper machine, civil works on the existing building, and the installation of a new boiler and new transformers.

The old machine was shutdown and dismantled in November 2010. Erection activities started in December 2010 and were completed in February 2011. After the commissioning phase, the machine was successfully started up, reaching steady saleable production in only a few days. Machine speed is now up to 900 m/min, with a trim width of 2,250 mm, for a daily production of 40 metric tons, increasing the mill’s overall production. MPM was established in 1989 and is owned by the Jalloul family.
