CMPC Tissue to Boost Energy Efficiency of Yankee Dryers in Latin America

CMPC Tissue S.A., Chile, has contracted PMT Italia S.p.A., Italy, to improve the energy efficiency and performance of nearly all of its Latin American tissue machines. PMT Industries (a subsidiary of PMT Italia) will retrofit at least 10 yankee dryers of varying sizes in CMPC’s tissue mills in Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Colombia, Mexico, and Brazil with new head insulation to optimize drying and energy efficiency.

The project was driven by the rapidly increasing price of energy supplies as well as environmental and safety concerns. CMPC adds that the increase in efficiency will not come at the expense of machine operations or output. It further explains that the "smooth external finish" resulting from the improvements will help with cleanliness on the dryer end and improve safety in the event that water sprays onto the end face of the yankee.
Retrofitting the yankees, CMPC also points out, improves their production cost structure, while at the same time further benefits the environment through a more efficient and energy saving production process across its entire tissue production organization.

Total cost of the project has not been disclosed, but CMPC says that it expects a payback of less than a year for each yankee retrofit.
