The TAPPI Yankee Dryer Safety and Reliability Committee held its fall meeting in Appleton, Wis., USA, November 3 - 4. More than 50 people attended, including representatives from the major tissue manufacturers, consultants, and suppliers who manufacture yankee dryers and support their operation.

The committee is focusing on sharing information and establishing standards that will increase safety and reduce delay when operating yankee dryers. Several subcommittees are focused on specific areas such as reducing chatter, setting guidelines for routine inspections of cast iron dryers, and inspection tips for steam systems and yankee hoods. To address chatter, a survey of all operating yankees in North America is planned, with results to be presented at PaperCon 2011 in May.

The committee is using it’s webpage to share non-proprietary technical information, making it available to any member.

Meeting sponsors included Metso, SCA, Clouth Sprenger, and AstenJohnson. AstenJohnson also treated the attendees to a tour of their forming fabrics plant, demonstrating their lean manufacturing philosophy to the group.

Committee chair Peter Costello of Kimberly-Clark announced the next meeting of the TAPPI Yankee Dryer Safety Committee will be in May 2011 in Covington, Ky., USA, (near Cincinnati). The meeting will occur during PaperCon, where several of the committees will present their recommendations.
