Advancing Tissue Manufacturing Through Innovation

Print Print this Article | Send to Colleague

Tissue manufacturing continues to be a growing market but faces increasing competition, making cost-effective production strategies more important than ever. A primary cost factor in tissue production is pulp furnish, and optimizing its full potential through refining is crucial.

Gary Li of Suzano will discuss pulp furnish optimization during his presentation "Expanding Tissue Furnish Options through Advanced Pulp Refining Technology" at TAPPICon 2025. Li will explore how high-consistency refining (HCR) technology, originally used in thermal dispersers during pulping, has evolved to enhance fiber performance. Unlike conventional low-consistency refining (LCR), which operates at less than 10 percent consistency, HCR functions at over 20 percent, reducing fiber shortening while maintaining energy efficiency. This advancement improves tissue paper’s physical properties, making it an attractive alternative for manufacturers seeking both quality and cost savings.

A key highlight of Li’s presentation is the role of eucalyptus pulp in tissue production. Known for its unique fiber characteristics, eucalyptus pulp significantly impacts machine operation, enhances product softness, and offers environmental benefits. Attendees will learn:

  • A comparative analysis of LCR and HCR in fiber development
  • Strategies for optimizing eucalyptus pulp refining
  • Techniques for producing tissue paper using 100 percent eucalyptus pulp

Li’s presentation is part of the TAPPI Tissue Division’s technical session titled, “Furnish to Finish - Innovations in Tissue Manufacturing,” on Monday, May 5 at 3:30 pm. Additionally, tissue professionals are encouraged to attend the Tissue Division Annual Meeting, May 5 from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm, to discuss industry advancements and network with experts.

TAPPICon 2025 – May 4-7 in Minneapolis, Minn:
TAPPICon is considered the premier event for the global forest products industry. With the theme, Collaborate - Educate – Elevate, the Conference features over 200+ presentations centered around six key topics impacting all segments of the industry, including tissue. Complementing these topics are three in-depth, division-led technical tracks that delve deeper into the latest processes and advancements available in the industry.
