Koalas Aren’t the Only Ones That Love Eucalyptus

In the quest for sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives, industries are constantly exploring innovative materials to replace traditional resources. One such breakthrough has been the use of eucalyptus pulp in the manufacturing of tissue products. A staple in every koala’s diet, eucalyptus is a fast-growing and renewable tree species that has also emerged as a promising source for pulp production, offering numerous environmental and performance benefits for the tissue industry.

Eucalyptus Pulp: A Soft, Strong and Eco-Friendly Choice

Eucalyptus trees are renowned for their rapid growth, making them an ideal choice for sustainable forestry practices. Unlike slower-growing hardwood trees traditionally used for pulp production, eucalyptus trees can be harvested in shorter cycles, reducing the environmental impact associated with deforestation. Furthermore, eucalyptus plantations require less land and water compared to other tree species, making them an eco-friendly option for pulp production.

Eucalyptus pulp offers qualities that enhance the performance of tissue products. The fibers derived from eucalyptus are known for their exceptional softness, making tissues gentler on the skin. This is a significant advantage, especially for facial tissues and toilet papers, where comfort is a key consideration for consumers.

Additionally, eucalyptus fibers contribute to the strength and durability of tissue products. The combination of softness and strength ensures that the tissue remains intact and effective during use.

On Monday, April 29, TAPPICon 2024 attendees will have the opportunity to hear Gary Li from Suzano Asia present Enhancing Tissue Performance through Optimizing the Use of Eucalyptus Kraft Pulp as part of the Tissue Track. Participants will gain insight into using high-strength eucalyptus pulp for tissue making, a refining strategy to maximize the potential of eucalyptus pulp in tissue making, and using non-wood fibers with eucalyptus pulp to address tissue machine runnability and performance issues. Additionally, Li will examine improving the cost competitiveness and sustainability of tissue products through using 100 percent eucalyptus pulp in making high-quality tissue.
