TAPPI’s Dust Mitigation Committee (DMC) was created in 2020 to provide an interactive platform where industry professionals can share ideas and advance solutions for dust mitigation across the tissue manufacturing industry.

At the most recent meeting in mid-October, following other scheduled discussions, DMC members heard a special presentation on “Explosion Venting – Combustible Dust Handling” from Staff Engineering Specialist Matt Payne of FM Global. FM Global is a property insurance company focused on risk mitigation through scientific research and engineering services.

During his presentation, Payne focused on five key areas:

  • Deflagration explosion
  • Combustible dust (lint)
  • Room explosion hazard
  • Equipment explosion hazard
  • Explosion protection

“Matthew Payne’s presentation really illustrated the risks and dangers of dust fires and explosions by use of gripping videos and examples,” said Valmet Applications Specialist and Chair of the DMC Alfredo Sarli, “as well as the research being conducted on this important issue.”

The DMC’s next meeting is scheduled for December 12, 2022 via Microsoft Teams. The scheduled presentation for that meeting will be on “Dust Composition on Finished Products,” given by Lucyna Pawlowska from Kemira.

In addition to these bi-monthly Committee meetings, the Tissue Division also holds twice-yearly (Fall and Spring) Yankee Dryer Safety and Reliability Committee (YDSRC) meetings, focusing on the safe operation and maintenance of one of the industry’s most dangerous and costly pieces of equipment. Their goal is to develop standards and standard practices for problems that cause drying system delay and compromise safety across the tissue industry. The next meeting will be held in the spring of 2023.

For more information on the DMC, YDSRC, or their respective meetings, please contact TAPPI’s Acting Tissue Division Manager Ashley Westbrook via email or by phone at 770-209-7284.
