According to Fastmarkets RISI China’s Yibin Paper is planning to add 450,000 mtpy of bamboo pulp capacity and 240,000 mtpy of tissue capacity to its existing mill in Yibin city, Sichuan province.

The company is seeking environmental approvals for the proposed project, which it estimates to involve a total investment of around RMB 4.5 billion ($665 million), with results pending.

The project will involve the construction of a 250,000- mtpy chemical pulp line and a 200,000- mtpy chemi-mechanical pulp line – both of which will be fed with bamboo and will be able to swing between bleached and unbleached grades – as well as 12 sets of 20,000- mtpy tissue machines, according to its environmental impact report.

The Yibin mill currently operates five tissue machines with a combined capacity of 125,000 mtpy and a 250,000- mtpy virgin cartonboard machine for cup and plate stock production. They are partly integrated with an on-site 200,000- mtpy chemical bamboo pulp line.

If the planned investment goes ahead, most of the bamboo fiber will be consumed in-house by the tissue and board machines, with any surplus to be sold as market pulp.
