According to Fastmarkets RISI the war in Ukraine took a significant toll on the country’s paper and board production in the first half of this year. According to figures from Ukrpapir, the Ukrainian paper association, paper and board production slumped by nearly 45 percent year on year in H1 to 242,400 metric tonnes, down from 436,800 metric tonnes a year earlier.

Tissue paper production alone fared somewhat better than the overall paper segment, sliding by 18 percent year on year in H1 to 55,900 metric tonnes compared to 68,500 metric tons a year earlier. Toilet paper roll production fell 14 percent in the monitored period, slipping to 295 million rolls in the first six months of this year.

According to Ukrpapir director Eduard Litvak, a new tissue project is on the agenda, with the Kokhavinska mill planning to install a new tissue PM, to be known as PM 3. Contracts with suppliers for the project have already been signed. The new PM will have a capacity of 30,000 mtpy of recycled fiber-based tissue and will boost the mill’s total annual production capacity by 30 percent.

As reported earlier, Ukrainian containerboard production levels almost halved in H1. A total of 137,000 tonnes of recycled containerboard was produced in the period compared to 256,000 metric tons during H1 2021.
