According to Fastmarkets RISI, Japan’s Daio Paper is building a 36,000 mtpy tissue machine at its existing Kani mill in Gifu prefecture, in the Chubu region of Honshu.

The company is also planning to build a new tissue converting and distribution plant at a nearby site in Kamo, Gifu, where jumbo rolls will be processed into facial and toilet tissue. Daio Paper entered into a purchase agreement for the land for the new plant, which is approximately 5 km from the Kani mill, in March. The deal with the seller, a Mitsubishi Motors subsidiary, is planned to be finalized in January.

The new TM and the converting and distribution plant will involve a total investment of ¥17 billion ($131 million), with the start of commercial operations scheduled for October 2024.Currently the Kani mill boasts a total paper capacity of 255,000 mtpy, 113,000 mtpy of which is tissue.

Daio Paper said the investment would strengthen its tissue production system in the Chubu region and support delivery to key areas in eastern Japan.
