China’s Shandong Dongshun Paper has fired up a new 20,000-mtpy tissue machine at its mill in Tai’an city, Shandong province. The unit churned out its first sheet of paper in early July.

Provided by domestic supplier Baotuo Paper Machinery, the machine has trim width of 2.85 m and a design speed of 1,500 m/min.

Its start-up has boosted the company’s total tissue paper capacity to approximately 300,000 tonnes/yr.

Shandong Dongshun is one of many companies that have invested in expansion projects in China’s vast and growing tissue industry.

According to a report published by the China National Household Paper Industry Association (CNHPIA), the country’s total tissue production reached 10.4 million tonnes in 2019, up 8.8 percent from 2018.

Tissue consumption went up by 8 percent to 9.6 million tonnes.

However, overall operating rates dropped from 73 percent in 2018 to 72 percent in 2019, indicating increasing oversupply in the sector.
