LC Paper has inaugurated a new biomass boiler at its tissue mill in Besalú, northeastern Spain, which enables the company to sell tissue products with neutral CO2 emissions. The opening of the facility took place on July 21.

According to LC Paper, energy consumption in traditional tissue paper processes amounts to some 3,000 kWh per tonne of paper produced. Thanks to the reengineering of its manufacturing process, LC Paper has reduced its energy consumption to 1,100 kWh/tonne. The company added that these 1,100 kWh/tonnes come from energy sources with a CO2 neutral footprint.

The biomass boiler was installed by the Catalan firm Imartec and can process up to 4,000 kg/hr of wood pellets from local forests. The investment was reportedly financed by the company Inypsa, which manages the operation of the new boiler.

LC Paper was established in Besalú in 1881. The company can currently produce some 50,000 tonnes/yr of tissue and generates annual sales of around Euro 40 million ($46.6 million).
