If you are a subscriber to the online access to Standards and TIPs and you are in a hurry for new documents that have not yet been posted, you can send a request to standards@tappi.org

TAPPI Standards in Ballot

The TAPPI Standards regulations require public review of standards that are up for ballot. Send a message to standards@tappi.org if you want to request a copy of draft in ballot.

Listed below are TAPPI Standards that have recently gone out for ballot to the corresponding Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG). The date in parentheses is the closing date for voting.

T 1218 "Calibration of reflectance standards for hemispherical geometry" (October 15, 2016)

T 1219 "Storage of paper samples for optical measurements and color matching" (October 22, 2016)

General Announcements
KAVI is the system that we use to ballot our standards when they come up for review, and KAVI has recently upgraded their workspace and will be migrating TAPPI to the new workspace on Thursday July 20. The balloting site will be down for one business day. Below are a few items to keep in mind regarding the new workspace, and we appreciate your patience and participation with the balloting system and the TAPPI standards review process.

 1. Your primary email address becomes your username; your password will remain the same.

2. We suggest logging in and updating your profile information to ensure it is current.

3. The new Workspace user interface is more streamlined, but all of the essential work you do remains the same.

4. All of your Group Email addresses work in the same manner; email sent during the upgrade will be delayed but delivered.

5. You can also expect to see some performance improvements in the product.

Product & Product Quality Division committees are in need of new members to support the development and maintenance of standards we all use in the manufacture of the products we deliver to our customers.

These committees discuss and make decisions on critical issues that deal with standards which are currently being used by the pulp and paper industry, as well as those which are being developed for them.

Below are the committees which are in need of your support:

Pulp and Chemical Properties Committee

Optical Properties Committee

Physical Properties Committee

Tissue Properties Subcommittee

Joining one or more of these groups gives you and your company the opportunity to participate in the discussion and development of the standards we use for evaluating the product and product quality. Without good pulp and paper industry standards to guide us, we will not be able to deliver what our customers require.  Therefore, please consider volunteering your company and your support for these committees.

For all those members who are already involved in Standard Specific Interest Groups (SSIG), we ask you to make the next step in standard development and maintenance participation by joining a committee today.

Meetings are held twice a year to discuss ongoing committee work. The meetings can be attended in person or by phone conference.

Please contact Steve Berg, P&PQ Division Chairman (sberg@thwingalbert.com) or Laurence Womack, Director of Standards and Awards (standards@tappi.org) for more information.

Getting started is easy. Do you have just a general idea for a standard, or are you farther along and have a substantial draft? If you just have a general idea for a standard or TIP, complete the New Idea Submission Form. TAPPI will review your idea and identify an appropriate committee or group to work on your suggestion. If you are further along, send an initial draft to standards@tappi.org. From there, the TAPPI Standards Manager will guide you through the appropriate process to finalize and approve the new document.

SSIG Members Needed
All Standard-Specific Interest Groups (SSIG) require a minimum of 10 members in order to ballot and vote on a draft of a method.

T 438 cm-06 "Zinc and cadmium in paper" requires two more SSIG members for ballot.

T 504 "Glue in paper (qualitative & quantitative determination)" requires two more members that are not representing the 'Producer' category.

T 579 "Diffuse brightness of paper, paperboard and pulp (d/0) (ultraviolet level D65)" requires one more SSIG member to ballot.

If no progress is made on these ballots, then they might be considered for withdrawal at the next QSMC meeting. If you have an interest in becoming a member of either of these SSIGs please contact standards@tappi.org.

Members for Working Groups of Useful Methods Needed

Reports outlining the overdue reviews for Standards and TIPs were sent to the Quality and Standards Management Committee (Q&SMC) on September 2, 2016. Copies of these reports were also sent to the assigned Working Group Chairmen for these overdue reviews as well as to chairmen of the appropriate technical groups in TAPPI.

Anyone who did not receive the overdue reports but who have an interest may obtain copies by requesting them from standards@tappi.org.

Working Group Chairmen: These reports were sent to you for your information and action, if required. Q&SMC may, according to the Standards Guidelines, withdraw any Standards or TIPs whose reviews are overdue, especially if it appears that little progress is being made on the Work Item. If more information or indications of progress on these Work Items are received prior to the next meeting (October 19, 2016), Q&SMC will take these reports of progress under consideration.

To provide updates regarding these reports, send a message to standards@tappi.org no later than Friday, October14, 2016, in order to be able to provide this information to Q&SMC at their next meeting.

Did You Know
... that many of the TAPPI Standard Test Methods require the use of reference materials for calibrating the instruments used in testing?  As an example, optical properties tests (brightness, whiteness, and other tests of appearance properties) are tests where the need for specialized reference materials is widely recognized.  The use of certified reference measures of mass, distance, time, and volume are also widely used within the paper industry measurement organizations for verifying calibration of basis weight balances, cutting dies and templates, tensile testers, to name only a few of the more obvious examples.

As assistance to those needing a source of reference calibrating materials or equipment, TAPPI maintains a Reference Materials List which is described in TAPPI Standard Practice T 1211.  Suppliers of standard materials for TAPPI Standard Test Methods that would like to be placed on the Reference Materials List are encouraged to consult this Standard Practice for guidance on the steps to take in order to be listed.  In addition to reading the requirements of TAPPI T 1211, interested parties are encouraged to contact Charles Bohanan, TAPPI Director of Standards and Awards, at standards@tappi.org to discuss specific needs of the Reference Materials program or assistance in becoming a listed material source.
