TAPPI Standards in Ballot

The TAPPI Standards regulations require public review of standards that are up for ballot. Send a message to standards@tappi.org if you want to request a copy of draft in ballot.

Listed below are TAPPI Standards that have recently gone out for ballot to the corresponding Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG). The date in parentheses is the closing date for voting.

T 281 sp-12 "Open drum washer mat sampling technique" (August 20, 2016)

T 421 om-12 "Qualitative (including optical microscopic) analysis of mineral filler and mineral coating of paper" (August 28, 2016)

T 525 om-12 "Diffuse brightness of paper, paperboard and pulp (d/0) -- ultraviolet level C" (August 29, 2016)

T 204 cm-07 "Solvent extractives of wood and pulp" (September 1, 2016)

T 1212 sp-12 "Light sources for evaluating papers including those containing fluorescent whitening agents" (September 9, 2016)

T 1214 sp-12 "Interrelation of reflectance, R0; reflectivity, R8; TAPPI opacity, C0.89; scattering, s; and absorption, k" (September 15, 2016)

T 1217 sp-12 "Photometric linearity of optical properties instruments" (September 16, 2016)

SSIG Members Needed

The Standard-Specific Interest Groups (SSIGs) for the following standards are in need of additional members

All Standard-Specific Interest Groups (SSIG) require a minimum of 10 members in order to ballot and vote on a draft of a method.

T 602 cm-06 "Analysis of sulfuric acid" is out of balance, and requires members that are not representing the 'Producer' interest group.

T 438 cm-06 "Zinc and cadmium in paper" requires two more SSIG members for ballot.

T 504 "Glue in paper (qualitative & quantitative determination)" requires two more members that are not representing the 'Producer' category.

T 579 "Diffuse brightness of paper, paperboard and pulp (d/0) (ultraviolet level D65)" requires one more SSIG member to ballot.

If no progress is made on these ballots, then they might be considered for withdrawal at the next QSMC meeting. If you have an interest in becoming a member of either of these SSIGs please contact standards@tappi.org.

Overdue Reports Distributed

New TIP Proposals

The Power and Recovery Subcommittee have proposed two new TIPs:

Sodium Sulfate (Sodium Thiosulfate) and Reduction Efficiency Measurement of Green Liquor in Chemical Recovery Processes - this TIP will review available methods for measurement of sulfate and thiosulfate ions in green and white liquors for reduction efficiency calculation, addressing the latest measurement techniques and the potential economic returns of a good reduction efficiency in kraft mills

Recommended Practice for Refractory Selection and Installation in Recovery Boilers - this TIP will address practices to optimize refractory life including proper material selection, installation methods, curing time, and repair methods.
