New or Revised Standards, TIPs, and Useful Methods

TAPPI Standards in Ballot

The TAPPI Standards regulations require public review of standards that are up for ballot. Send a message to standards@tappi.org if you want to request a copy of draft in ballot.

Listed below are TAPPI Standards that have recently gone out for ballot to the corresponding Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG). The date in parentheses is the closing date for voting.

T 281 "Open drum washer mat sampling technique" (June 16, 2016)

WI 3032 "Dry tensile properties of paper towel and tissue products (using constant rate of elongation apparatus)" (June 20, 2016)

T 204 "Solvent extractives of wood and pulp" (June 24, 2016)

SSIG Members Needed

The Standard-Specific Interest Groups (SSIGs) for the following standards are in need of additional members

All Standard-Specific Interest Groups (SSIG) require a minimum of 10 members in order to ballot and vote on a draft of a method.

T 602 cm-06 "Analysis of sulfuric acid" needs one more member to join the SSIG.

T 438 cm-06 "Zinc and cadmium in paper" requires three more SSIG members for ballot.

T 504 "Glue in paper (qualitative & quantitative determination)" (need two more members that are not of producer category)

If no progress is made on these ballots, then they might be considered for withdrawal at the next QSMC meeting. If you have an interest in becoming a member of either of these SSIGs please contact standards@tappi.org.

Standards Coming Up For Review

The following standards are scheduled for review on the date indicated:

Announcement of SARG Meeting

The next meeting of the Standards Advisory Review Group (SARG) is will take place in Cincinnati, OH, at the TAPPI 2016 PaperCon Conference, Wednesday, May 18, 2016, at 1:30 pm Eastern time. SARG approval is the last step prior to publication for any new or revised standard.

In order to act on any appeals from TAPPI members relevant to the standards up for approval, the SARG meeting is open to anyone for participation. The agenda will be posted on the SARG page at least 50 days prior to the meeting, in accordance with TAPPI’s guidelines. There will be links from the agenda items to the final drafts that are up for approval.

Overdue Reports Distributed

New TIP Proposals

The Power and Recovery Subcommittee have proposed two new TIPs:

Sodium Sulfate (Sodium Thiosulfate) and Reduction Efficiency Measurement of Green Liquor in Chemical Recovery Processes - this TIP will review available methods for measurement of sulfate and thiosulfate ions in green and white liquors for reduction efficiency calculation, addressing the latest measurement techniques and the potential economic returns of a good reduction efficiency in kraft mills

Recommended Practice for Refractory Selection and Installation in Recovery Boilers - this TIP will address practices to optimize refractory life including proper material selection, installation methods, curing time, and repair methods.
