Four recently revised TAPPI Standards have been approved as American National Standards:

T 835 "Water absorption of corrugating medium: water drop absorption test"

A new TIP has been proposed: Inspection design for black liquor recovery boilers: a re-examination of the conventional wisdom about inspection methods and frequencies

The abstract is as follows: Condition awareness is a crucial factor in the maintenance and repair decisions made during the life of any boiler.  Black liquor recovery boilers have unique hazards and inspection requirements.  Thorough, thoughtfully directed, and efficiently applied condition monitoring efforts are most likely to result in effective and timely maintenance activity that will increase reliability and maximize the life of the boiler.  Experience and research have advanced sufficiently that the industry needs to re-examine the scope and frequency of destructive and non-destructive inspection and testing in black liquor recovery boilers.

The purpose of this technical information paper (TIP) is to offer a modern approach to recovery boiler inspection that includes: preparation of the boiler for inspection; identification of the failure mechanisms common to recovery boilers; the locations where these mechanisms occur; and the technologies, both destructive and nondestructive, that can assure the accumulation of accurate information about the condition of the boiler.  Reference is made to numerous existing TIPs that offer specific techniques for nondestructive examination that will not be repeated in this document.

A new TIP has been proposed: Black iiquor recovery boiler inspection planning and implementation.

The abstract is as follows: All boilers are subject to wear and tear, and all boilers need to be inspected periodically to maintain an awareness of their condition.  Condition awareness is used to plan maintenance and repair activities.  Black liquor recovery boilers have special hazards inherent in their operation and patterns of wear that differ from utility boilers, and many times, from each other.  Owner/operators must decide how to best care for their particular units, and often partner with inspection vendors with the manpower and expertise to execute inspections, gather the data and assist in its interpretation.

The purpose of this technical information paper (TIP) is to offer guidance in the management of the inspection process.  Considerations around safe work practices are described.  Communication of inspection scope and implementation of the inspection plan is outlined.  Ongoing communication during the course of the inspection and final report content is addressed.  The reader will take the inspection scope, that they have determined is appropriate to his/her unit, and interact effectively with the vendor or vendors requested to execute the inspection.

Each year, TAPPI offers multiple scholarship opportunities to graduate and undergraduate students in the pulp, paper, packaging and related industries. Scholarships are available in several categories and each has the potential to assist students in achieving their educational goals. Scholarship application requirements vary by division and a general information form must also be completed. The deadline to submit applications for academic year 2015-2016 Technical Division scholarships is Feb. 15, 2015.

The Coating and Graphic Arts Division  provides up to four $1000 scholarships for students majoring in scientific or technical disciplines related to the manufacture and/or graphic arts use of coated paper and paperboard.

The Corrugated Packaging Division  provides up to four scholarships each year, funded by endowments from both TAPPI and industry supporters, to students who demonstrate an interest in the corrugated industry and demonstrate overall maturity, job potential and aptitude for contribution.

The Engineering Division  provides up to two scholarships each year for undergraduate students who are interested in pursuing an engineering or science degree within the pulp and paper industry.

The Environmental Working Group  offers the $2500 Douglas Barton Memorial Scholarship to outstanding candidates in the area of environmental control as it relates to the pulp, paper, and allied industries.

The Paper and Board Division  provides one or more $1000 scholarships each year to students who intend to use their talents for advancing the science and technology of papermaking.

The Process and Product Quality Division  provides a single $1000 scholarship to talented science and engineering students who plan to pursue careers in the development of quality management awareness within the pulp and paper industry.

The Process Control Division  provides a single $1000 scholarship to engineering students who demonstrate an interest in the development of professional skills within the process control fields of the pulp and paper industry.

In addition to Technical Division scholarships, TAPPI also offers the William L. Cullison Memorial Scholarship, in amounts of up to $4000, for undergraduate students majoring in pulp and paper science. The deadline to submit applications for academic year 2015-2016 is May 1.

If you just have a general idea for a standard or TIP, complete the New Idea Submission Form. TAPPI will review your idea and identify an appropriate committee or group to work on your suggestion. A proposal has been made for a new Standard: "Conformational isomerism of cellulose under incremental stress or strain."

This method is to determine conformational isomerism of cellulose under incremental stress or strain. Almost all matter, including viscoelastic cellulose, respond to energy changes which almost invariably influence its atomic and or molecular bond characteristics (length, orientation, and geometry). Changes in bonding characteristics of conformationally isomeric cellulose is characterized by variations in the relative amounts of rotamers which has implications on the molecular organization and physical integrity of cellulose that should inform the processing and material application of cellulose.

A Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG) must be formed for this proposal. Any individuals who are interested in this Standard may join the SSIG to receive ballots when this method is ready for vote. A proposal has been made for a new Standard: "Identification of non-native cellulose in cellulose-based composites."

This method is for identification of non-native cellulose in cellulose-based composites. A scatter plot of the 1095 cm-1 Raman band intensity with rotation angle of the wave plate is indicates that non-native (processed) cellulose has a characteristic scatter plot pattern of two orthogonally intercepting dumbbells. This plot pattern proves to be a signature of non-native cellulose that can be used in this determination.

A Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG) must be formed for this proposal. Any individuals who are interested in this Standard may join the SSIG to receive ballots when this method is ready for vote. If you would like to join the SSIG for this project, please notify the Standards Department at no later than January 30, 2015.

SSIG Members Needed

The five-year review of T 465 "Static creasing of paper for water vapor transmission tests" was balloted on November 25, 2014, and was due on January 9, 2015. Although there were no comments or negative votes, the SSIG is out of balance after dropping members who have missed three ballots in a row.

There is an overabundance of "General Interest" members. No category of interest groups can have more than 50% of the membership of an SSIG in order to validate any ballots.

If you do not fit into the "General Interest" category (primarily for retired members and the unemployed) and have an interest in this standard, it would be helpful if you joined the SSIG to help with the balance. The system for review and development of TAPPI Standards requires an announcement of review dates so that any interested TAPPI parties may access the drafts, submit comments, and/or join the Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG) to cast an official vote.
