TAPPI Standards in Ballot

The TAPPI Standards regulations require public review of standards that are up for ballot. Send a message to standards@tappi.org if you want to request a copy of draft in ballot.

Listed below are TAPPI Standards that have recently gone out for ballot to the corresponding Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG). The date in parentheses is the closing date for voting.

T 411 "Thickness (caliper) of paper, paperboard, and combined board" (December 1, 2014)

T 1009 "Tensile strength and elongation at break for fiber glass mats" (December 1, 2014)

T 456 "Tensile breaking strength of water-saturated paper and paperboard ('wet tensile strength')" (December 8, 2014)

T 555 "Roughness of paper and paperboard (print-surf method)" (December 12, 2014)

T 829 "Score quality test" (December 18, 2014)

T 1012 "Moisture content of fiber glass mats" (December 18, 2014)

T 541 "Internal bond strength of paperboard (z-direction tensile)" (December 19, 2014)

T 558 "Surface wettability and absorbency of sheeted materials using an automated contact angle tester (January 2, 2015)

SSIG Members Needed

T 1015 "Fiber glass mat uniformity (visual defects)" was balloted for its regular five-year review on September 23, 2014 (due November 7, 2014). After the ballot was closed and delinquent members dropped, the Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG) is out of balance.

An SSIG is out of balance if any interest group makes up more than 50% of the membership. In this case, there are more than 50% suppliers of chemicals and raw materials belonging to the group.

If you are not a supplier of chemicals or raw materials, and you have an interest in this Standard, please contact standards@tappi.org no later than December 19, 2014, to join the SSIG.

Standards Ready for Final Approval at SARG

The standards eligible for approval at SARG are listed below. The asterisks (*) indicate the standards that will be eligible for submission to ANSI for consideration as American National Standards.

*T 835 "Water absorption of corrugating medium: water drop absorption test"

*T 449 "Bacteriological examination of paper and paperboard"

T 458 "Surface wettability of paper (angle of contact method)"

*T 845 (NEW Standard - WI 3031) "Wet pin adhesion of corrugated board by selective separation"

*T 702 "Rheological measurements for characterization of polyolefins: low-density polyethylene (LDPE) for extrusion coating"

Announcement of SARG Meeting

The meeting of the Standards Advisory Review Group (SARG) that was originally scheduled for November 4, 2014, has been postposed and will be held on Tuesday, December 2, 2014, at 2:30 pm Eastern time.

The reason for the postponement was the lack of a quorum among the SARG members on November 4. SARG approval is the last step prior to publication for any new or revised standard. The SARG meeting is open for anyone to participate by conference call.

No change has been made in the items on the agenda, which can be viewed on the SARG page. There are links to the documents from the agenda.

If you would like to participate in the SARG meeting by conference call, please send a message before December 2, 2014, to standards@tappi.org.

Overdue Reports Distributed

A proposal has been made for a new Standard: "Conformational isomerism of cellulose under incremental stress or strain."

This method is to determine conformational isomerism of cellulose under incremental stress or strain. Almost all matter, including viscoelastic cellulose, respond to energy changes which almost invariably influence its atomic and or molecular bond characteristics (length, orientation, and geometry). Changes in bonding characteristics of conformationally isomeric cellulose is characterized by variations in the relative amounts of rotamers which has implications on the molecular organization and physical integrity of cellulose that should inform the processing and material application of cellulose.

A Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG) must be formed for this proposal. Any individuals who are interested in this Standard may join the SSIG to receive ballots when this method is ready for vote. If you would like to join the SSIG for this project, please notify the Standards Department at standards@tappi.org no later than December 17, 2014.

A proposal has been made for a new Standard: "Identification of non-native cellulose in cellulose-based composites."

This method is for identification of non-native cellulose in cellulose-based composites. A scatter plot of the 1095 cm-1 Raman band intensity with rotation angle of the wave plate is indicates that non-native (processed) cellulose has a characteristic scatter plot pattern of two orthogonally intercepting dumbbells. This plot pattern proves to be a signature of non-native cellulose that can be used in this determination.
