Special note:  Documents appearing in the TAPPI online version of the Standards and TIPs are updated once a month (usually around the 15th). The Community Classification Standards Board (CCSB) is researching the transportation characteristics related to the shipping of toilet paper in accordance with the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) standard. NMFC is a standard used by the trucking industry that provides a comparison of commodities moving in commerce.

CCSB has designed a questionnaire to be completed by manufacturers and shippers of toilet paper. The source of the information furnished will be identified only as "shipper," and no confidential information will be released. The CCSB would also welcome an opportunity to visit shipping facilities and observe shipments of toilet paper as they are presented to the carrier.

The CCSB would like this questionnaire submitted no later than August 26, 2014. If your company is a manufacturer or shipper of toilet paper and you have not already received the questionnaire directly from CCSB, please contact, and a copy of the letter and questionnaire can be sent to you.

CSA Group, a leading standards development, testing and certification organization, has released Canada’s first national standard on cellulosic nanomaterials: CSA Z5100-14, Cellulosic nanomaterials - Test methods for characterization. The new standard provides over 20 test methods allowing nanocellulose materials to be identified and characterized according to unique properties to encourage introduction into global markets.

This national Standard provides a consolidated set of test methods to characterize base cellulosic nanomaterials, specifically cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) and cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs). Over twenty test methods are provided, grouped into categories of purity, morphology, and physical and chemical properties. It is the first in a series of standards on cellulosic nanomaterials intended to serve as a foundation for the development of both Canadian and international standards to facilitate introduction of cellulosic nanomaterials into global markets. This Standard does not cover the characterization of cellulose microfibrils (CMFs), cellulose microcrystals (CMCs) or cellulosic nanomaterial enabled products.  Further information can be obtained by emailing

Although there have been problems with the online voting system for TAPPI Standards for a while now, the good news is that TAPPI has launched a new system based on one developed by our vendor, the Kavi Corporation, called Kavi Workspace.

Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG) members should have already received an email from This will be the sender for messages that the TAPPI Standards Manager creates in the system. The email provided login instructions, a user name, and a password. After an SSIG member logs in the first time, the password can be changed; users can use the same password they use for the main TAPPI website but should be aware that logging into one does not log one into the other (they are hosted on separate servers).

On the user’s home page appears general information about the system on the right-hand side. On the left-hand side are notices in case there are ballots to be voted on or new documents of interest. Whenever there is an item posted for ballot or any other documents or emails posted in any of the SSIGs that a user belongs to, an email notice will go out.

In the general information on the right are links to obtain help and a link to online training videos as well.

In the upper left-hand corner of the home page is a "Groups" dropdown box. The list in this dropdown box is divided between "My Groups" and "All Groups." "My Groups" are the active groups -- i.e., groups where some activity is currently going on (Work Item opened, ballots in progress, etc.) -- that the logged-in user is a member of. "All Groups" shows all SSIGs that are currently active -- including those the user belongs to (in bold). Click on any group to go to its home page. Those who are not a member of a particular group will see a link to request membership in that SSIG.

Among the active groups listed are the standards that will come up for review in 2014. These will be visible when the review begins. If you have not seen the list of standards up for review this year, go to

If you are a member of any SSIGs, and you have not received the login instructions, please contact immediately  As with the old system, you will receive emails alerting you whenever a ballot from one of your SSIGs is up for vote.

To join existing SSIGs that may not show up yet on the new site (because they are not currently active), you can still sign up for them at any time by visiting the Subject Categories page.

Getting started is easy. Do you have just a general idea for a standard, or are you farther along and have a substantial draft? If you just have a general idea for a standard or TIP, complete the New Idea Submission Form. TAPPI will review your idea and identify an appropriate committee or group to work on your suggestion. If you are further along, send an initial draft to From there, the TAPPI Standards Manager will guide you through the appropriate process to finalize and approve the new document.
Plans are already underway for the 100th Anniversary of TAPPI, which will be observed during the 2015 PaperCon Conference in Atlanta, April 19-22.2015.

As part of the celebration, TAPPI and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) have invited ISO Technical Committee TC 6 and its subcommittees and working groups to hold its 2015 meeting during the PaperCon week.

To keep up with the 100th Anniversary plans, there's a special website: On this site you can also sign up for the special newsletter for this event.
