General Announcements

Getting started is easy. Do you have just a general idea for a standard, or are you farther along and have a substantial draft? If you just have a general idea for a standard or TIP, complete the New Idea Submission Form. TAPPI will review your idea and identify an appropriate committee or group to work on your suggestion. If you are further along, send an initial draft to From there, the TAPPI Standards Manager will guide you through the appropriate process to finalize and approve the new document.

A new TIP, "Recovery Boiler Leak Indication," has been proposed. The scope is:

"The purpose of this technical information paper is to itemize the boiler operating parameters that may provide information about a pressure part leak in the recovery boiler.  Each item will be accompanied by an explanation of how and why these parameters indicate a leak."

If you would like more information or if you would like to participate in the development of this TIP, please contact by November 15, 2013.

TIP 0305-31 "Daily and month-to-date status report" has been withdrawn based on a recommendation of the Working Group reviewing the TIP.

As announced in the August 2013 issue of STAR. The working group believes that it is no longer necessary due to the number of computer driven maintenance programs currently available.

Withdrawn TIPs are still availbale for TAPPI members free of charge, or for nonmembers at a price of $10.

SSIG Members Needed

A ballot on T 526 cm-04 "Blister resistance of coated paper in heatset printing" was distributed for its ten-year review ballot on May 7, 2013. Due to low response to the ballot, a second ballot was distributed on July 17, 2013. The percent return of this ballot was also low.

Under the current TAPPI guidelines, this method was balloted for withdrawal in this review because it is a Classical Method that has been through regular review more than once. There was one negative voting against withdrawal, and that voter has agreed to become working group chair for the review and has requested that the next ballot be for retention and possibly revision of T 526 as a Classical Method.

Because of the low percent return, several members of the Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG) are in danger of being dropped after the next ballot due to missing three ballots in a row. However, if all of those members are dropped, then we will drop below the minimum 10 members required to constitute an SSIG.

In order to have enough SSIG members after the delinquent members are dropped, we need to add new members to the SSIG. If you have an interest in T 526 and would like to join this SSIG, please send a message to no later than November 15, 2013.

Overdue Reports Distributed

Reports outlining the overdue reviews for Standards and TIPs were sent to the Quality and Standards Management Committee (Q&SMC) on August 19, 2013. Copies of these reports were also sent to the assigned Working Group Chairmen for these overdue reviews as well as to chairmen of the appropriate technical groups in TAPPI.

Anyone who did not receive the overdue reports but who have an interest may obtain copies by requesting them from

Working Group Chairmen: These reports were sent to you for your information and action, if required. Q&SMC may, according to the Standards Guidelines, withdraw any Standards or TIPs whose reviews are overdue, especially if it appears that little progress is being made on the Work Item. If more information or indications of progress on these Work Items are received prior to the next meeting (November 5, 2013), Q&SMC will take these reports of progress under consideration.

To provide updates regarding these reports, send a message to to no later than Monday, November 4, 2013, in order to be able to provide this information to Q&SMC at their next meeting.
