New or Revised Standards, TIPs, and Useful Methods

TIP 0402-30 "Inspection for cracking of composite tubes in black liquor recovery boilers" (Revision and reinstatement of previously withdrawn TIP)

Special note: Documents appearing in the TAPPI online version of the Standards and TIPs are updated once a month (usually around the 15th). So it is possible that there is a delay between the publication announcement and the posting online. If you are a subscriber to the online access to Standards and TIPs and you are in a hurry for new documents that have not yet been posted, you can send a request to standards@tappi.org.

TAPPI Standards in Ballot

The TAPPI Standards regulations require public review of standards that are up for ballot. TAPPI members can view any drafts that are in ballot by logging in to the TAPPI web site (www.tappi.org), clicking on "My TAPPI," and then clicking on the "Standards Public Draft Review" link on the left side of the page. If you would like to review and comment on any draft and are not a member of the corresponding Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG), you may view the draft on line or you may request a copy of the draft being balloted by writing to standards@tappi.org. TAPPI members may join SSIGs as permanent members; go to the Subject Category page to download forms for this purpose. Nonmembers of TAPPI may join any SSIG as a voting member; to do so, send a message to standards@tappi.org to receive a copy of the draft and a ballot.

Listed below are TAPPI Standards that have recently gone out for ballot to the corresponding Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG). The date in parentheses is the closing date for voting.

T 262 "Preparation of mechanical pulps for testing" (August 2, 2012)
T 538 "Roughness of paper and paperboard (Sheffield method)" (August 3, 2012)
T 697 "Accelerated test for viscosity stability of clay slurries" (August 8, 2012)
T 563 "Equivalent black area (EBA) and count of visible dirt in pulp, paper and paperboard by image analysis" (August 10, 2012)
T 567 "Determination of effective residual ink concentration (ERIC) by infrared reflectance measurement" (August 10, 2012)
T NEW (WI 3026) "Preparation of handsheets for effective residual ink concentration (ERIC) determination, using a sheet mold with filter paper" (August 10, 2012)
T NEW (WI 3027) "Preparation of handsheets for effective residual ink concentration (ERIC) determination, using a sheet mold" (August 10, 2012)
T 657 "Sampling of fillers and pigments" (August 13, 2012)
T 572 "Accelerated pollutant aging of printing and writing paper by pollution chamber exposure apparatus" (August 24, 2012)
T 698 "Determination of wetting tension of polyethylene and polypropylene films and coatings (modified visking analytical technique)" (August 24, 2012)
T 459 "Surface strength of paper (wax pick test)" (August 27, 2012)

SSIG Members Needed

Classical Test Method T 697 "Accelerated test for viscosity stability of clay slurries" is due for its ten-year review. Poor response to the first two ballots has led to a number of Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG) members being in danger of being dropped from the SSIG due to lack of response.

This method describes a procedure for predicting the relative storage life of aqueous kaolin clay dispersions by measuring viscosity increase during storage at an elevated temperature.

In order for this method to remain active, new SSIG members must be recruited to participate in the balloting process. If you have an interest in this method and would like to join the SSIG, please send a message to standards@tappi.org before August 6, 2012 (the due date for the ballot on Draft 3). When you join the SSIG before August 6, you will be sent the Draft 3 ballot to vote on.
