Special note: Documents appearing in the TAPPI online version of the Standards and TIPs are updated once a month (usually around the 30th). So it is possible that there is a delay between the publication announcement and the posting online. If you are a subscriber to the online access to Standards and TIPs and you are in a hurry for new documents that have not yet been posted, you can send a request for TIPs to tip@tappi.org or for Standards to standards@tappi.org.

STAR of the Month

Title: Compression Wood Identification in Pulpwood

This method is concerned with the detection of the compression wood that can be recognized by unaided vision or by means of a simple viewing device (1). Normally this is sufficient for operating purposes.  Microscopic and chemical tests may be required in special cases. Severe and intermediate forms of compression wood are easily recognized, once the observer becomes familiar with their general characteristics. The borderline form requires some practice to distinguish it from normal wood. A viewing box is useful for training an observer and as an aid in deciding doubtful cases.

Announcement of SARG Meeting

The Standards Advisory Review Group (SARG) is a group of TAPPI members appointed by the Quality and Standards Management Committee (Q&SMC) who are familiar with the TAPPI Standards process and are qualified to participate in the final review of Standards after they have been approved by the appropriate Standards-Specific Interest Group (SSIG).

SARG is required to meet twice a year to act on Standards that are in the final stage of review. The next meeting of the Standards Advisory Review Group (SARG) will be held virtually on Thursday, October 16th, 2025, 1:00 – 2:00 pm (EST).

The SARG meeting is open to anyone for participation to discuss any appeals relevant to the Standards up for approval. The meeting agenda and links to the final drafts have been posted on the SARG Page.

If you would like to participate virtually via Zoom, please email standards@tappi.org by October 9th, 2025 for access.

Overdue Reports Distributed

A report outlining the overdue reviews for Standards was sent to the Quality and Standards Management Committee (Q&SMC) on September 23rd, 2025. Copies of these reports were also sent to the assigned Working Group Chairs for these overdue reviews as well as to Chairs of the appropriate technical groups in TAPPI.

Anyone who did not receive the overdue report but who have an interest may obtain a copy by requesting it from standards@tappi.org.

Working Group Chairs: This report was sent to you for your information and action, if required. Q&SMC may, according to the Standards Guidelines, withdraw any Standards or TIPs whose reviews are overdue, especially if it appears that little progress is being made on the Work Item. If more information or indications of progress on these Work Items are received prior to the next meeting (Thursday, October 16th, 2025), Q&SMC will take these reports of progress under consideration.

To provide updates regarding this report, send a message to standards@tappi.org no later than October 9th, 2025, in order to be able to provide this information to Q&SMC at their October 16th meeting.

General Announcements

Getting started is easy. Do you have just a general idea for a Standard, or are you farther along and have a substantial draft? If you just have a general idea for a Standard or TIP, complete the New Idea Submission form. TAPPI will review your idea and identify an appropriate committee or group to work on your suggestion. If you are further along, send an initial draft to standards@tappi.org. From there, the TAPPI Standards Manager will guide you through the appropriate process to finalize and approve the new document.

Guidelines are available free for TAPPI members and for a $10 charge to nonmembers. Anyone wishing to open a Work Item for reinstatement of withdrawn Useful Method should contact standards@tappi.org.

Did You Know

... that to participate in the balloting process for TAPPI Standards you must sign up for the Standard-Specific Interest Groups (SSIGs)? Drafts are available for anyone to review, but to vote you must be a member of the SSIG. Each Standard has its own SSIG – so you have to sign up for each Standard that you have an interest in. Links to all of the SSIGs (by subject category) can be found on the SSIG Join Page. When you click on a Subject Category, it will display links to related SSIGs.
